Art Appreciation Moment of the Day: Chapman Baritone

Today’s magic themed entry into the Art Appreciation Moment of the Day, yields this Zatara piece by Chapman Baritone (if that is indeed his real name).

As I press forward with my Zatara family obsession, I’ve developed a better distillation of my Mutants and Masterminds character concept (which I have yet to play, grr). Since the game is gonna be set in the DC Universe in the year 2039, he’s evolved into the future son of Zatanna Zatara and John Constantine, thus becoming John Constantine Zatara II. The game will hopefully have a lot of Watchmen influences and a strong Batman Beyond tone.

Originally, the drawing was used as part of a submission for a local comic book store art contest (the store’s called Alakazam, so a magician seemed apropos), but since I’m planning on playing a similar character I figured I’d recycle it and post.

I referred a lot to an issue of Madame Xanadu for the figure and costuming. I used a picture of Milo Ventimiglia for the face, and the Lois Lane quote was originally from an SNL sketch.

That’s pretty cool. Looks a lot like Sean Chen’s work.
