    Sony Buys Terminator Rights

    Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherFebruary 26, 2008Updated:February 26, 20086 Comments1 Min Read

terminatorcover.jpgThe headline is a bit misleading. What it really should say is Sony buys the rights to distribute the next Terminator movie, staring Batman’s Christian Bale, internationally.

McG will helm the film, the first in a new “Terminator” trilogy that stars Christian Bale as John Connor. The project also reunites John Brancato and Michael Ferris, who partnered to pen “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” as well as Moritz Borman, a producer on the 2003 film.

Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins is scheduled to be in theaters in the first half of 2009.

I like Christian Bale, but I wonder where else can they take this franchise. T3 pretty much ended with the end of the world as we know it, so it will either be a post-apocalyptic sci-fi series, with little connection to our world, or they will ignore the last movie.

Never underestimate Christian Bale, first of all. Secondly, the war against the machines can be handled in fairly kick-ass fashion if done correctly. Bale hasn’t picked a crap script in a few years and I wouldn’t mind seeing something in the vein of Aliens or Starship Troopers with a deadly serious tone featuring a band of do-or-die freedom fighters taking on nigh-unstoppable machines.

If John Connor sends wave after wave of his own men against a steel-plated army of killbots rather than some more old-hat, close-quarters (and less expensive) flesh-coated T-Bot on T-Bot action, I’m in, at least for a matinée.

Bale will play Connor actually fighting the War right? So what stops the movie from simply acting as a sort of…I guess prequel to the first Terminator. More prequels. Time travel movies really should keep it small and contained at this point the Terminator series is a huge tangled mess of loops as it is.

Heh, you said “will helm”. I wonder if we’ll hear the Wilhelm in this one.

Just think Reign of Fire with Terminators and without Matthew McConaughey. Christian Bale could pull off the Post-Attack world in Terminator, but who will play Arnold’s role as the Terminator? Good Lord I hope he doesn’t have Terminators protecting him.
