Review: Wonder Woman #27

Or – “Make A Hawk A Dove, End A War With Love, Make A Lah Farnah FOO!”

WW1.jpg

Sorry, I was never really clear on what that last lyric was.  For months now, Gail Simone has seemingly been building up to something epic with her work on Wonder Woman, and it seems that we’re finally going to get a glimpse of what it is.  Last issue, yet another strange creature arrived to challenge the Amazing Amazon, but this time, the story ends differently…

Review: Superman & Batman vs. Vampires & Werewolves #5

Oh Dear God, Make It Stop!

bsvw5picon.jpg

For the last couple of months I’ve subjected myself to one of the most bizarre team up stories ever written.  While this is supposed to be a Superman Batman team up, Superman failed to appear in the first two issues, and save for a moment of the two passing one another on the way to bring down a Lovecraftian horror, the two have been following separate storylines.  Throw in passing cameos galore, and you have the makings of a mega crossover event.  Right?

Review: Wonder Woman #26

In which Genocide walks the Earth

wonderwoman26picon.jpg

The DCU experienced a year without Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, and since the One Year Later return, things have not been so good.  Superman got his powers back, only to discover he is no longer the last son of Krypton thanks to the New Krypton story line.  Batman went on a spiritual journey in which he killed Batman, returned as Batman, only to “die” in the pages of the R.I.P. arc and Final Crisis (two different titles to kill Batman?  That’s one bad S.O.B.).  Now it’s Wonder Woman’s turn to experience the one thing that might be here undoing – Genocide.

Review: Justice Society of America: Kingdom Come Special: The Kingdom

Bow down to Gog

kingdompicon.jpg

After reading the final installment of this colon series, I’m really glad DC decided to spin these one-shots and specials out of JSA.  The Gog/Magog/Kingdom story has gone on long enough, and compressing four months worth of story into three one-shots solves the problem of the story grinding in place.  Fortunately, Gog makes a demand that may cause the breakdown to occur.

Quote of the Week: National Con Reactions

thenationalcon.jpg

People I didn’t like: The dealer who got in your way and barked, “Excuse me, but I’ve got a trivia question for you!”. The art dealer I overheard loudly and insultingly taking a guy to task over the original art he was trying to sell:  “Take another look at your pages,  then come back and ask  me again how much you want for them.”  He actually laughed in the guy’s face. The guy at the booth with the plush toys strewn about the place like a kid’s bedroom who had no listed prices so he could jack them up if interest was shown in anything. Emily was interested in a small Wonder Woman beanbag toy but because it was “from the WB Store” he had to start a sales pitch spiel on it, with, of course, a boosted price for the piece of junk (Sarah knew it was worthless, because we threw a bunch of them out a while back because no one wanted them and they were worth jack turd on e-bay. The folks who didn’t realize they were scaring our daughter by trying too hard to talk to her. The people asking creators for sketches while said creators were standing in the aisle talking to their friends. Those two yelling  jagoffs in the bathroom.  The creepy guy with his sketchbook full of his characters, talking about nude versus clothed con sketches he was getting people to do (“Just make it sexy, you know, innovate!”. Ugh.) Myself for being there and forcing my child to endure some stuff Dante cut out of his book for being too “uncomfy”. All the bastards who seemed unaware that other people exist in the world, cannot hear the words “excuse me” or “watch your back, please”, and think backpacks are force fields that keep them safe from annoying people who dare to try to walk through an aisle. The Stormtroopers, who more and more have grown a sense of some sort of entitlement at these things to be in the way, walk in front of people, block not only aisles but the goddamned street outside the hotel, what do they think they are, security? They’re idiots in hard-plastic adult Underoos, fer chrissakes. Oh, and, finally  –

THAT FUCKING BIGMOUTH PARASITE IN THE GRAY T-SHIRT AND BASEBALL CAP WHO DIDN’T SHUT UP ONCE ALL DAY SATURDAY.

Villains at Universal

villains01_Picon.jpg

Viper Comics has sold the film rights to Villains to Universal Pictures in a deal in the mid-six figure range.

The graphic novel, by Adam Cogan and Ryan Cody, puts super bad guys center stage. The plot, told from the baddies’ perspective, follows a young man who is failing at life and finds purpose when he meets a Svengali-style villain who takes him under his wing.

Universal has hired Matt Jennison and Brent Strickland to pen the adaptation, with Viper’s Jessie Garza co-producing.  Jennison and Strickland are the duo behind Wonder Woman for Warner Bros.

I’ve not read the title, but checking out the preview (after the jump), I can instantly tell I like the art style and color scheme,.  As far as the duo writing the adaptation goes, Jennison and Strickland have not had their Wonder Woman script move into production, and no one has sent me any leaked scripts (hint, hint), so I have no idea how they’ll approach the title.
