Women in Comics
On June 14 from 7–9 p.m., the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. will present FRESH TALK: Who are the new superwomen of the universe?
March is Women’s History Month and for the comic book industry that means it is Women In Comics Month. As a companion piece to my editorial Why We Need Women in Comics Month (http://majorspoilers.com/2016/03/14/editorial-need-women-comics-month/), I present you with my Top 5 Current Comics Starring Women.
March has historically been Women’s History Month and in an industry that is placing growing demands on equality on both the creator and story side, the comics community has co-opted March into Women In Comics Month with notable feminist voices inside the community such as Gail Simone and Kelly Sue DeConnick promoting independent female creators across social media in the spirit of awareness. Additionally, pro-Women in the Comics Industry groups such as The Valkyries (an organization of women working in/owners of comic shops), have been highlighted in the media and used their notoriety to organize events and promote female-spearheaded projects.
Hope Nicholson is a compelling figure of the comic book community. She is the Owner of Bedside Press and current editor of Margaret Atwood’s most recent foray into graphic novels Angel Catbird as well as working for Quirk Books on a history of female characters in comments.
Paulina Ganucheau is a triple threat: illustrator, designer, graphic artist and not only has she lent her talents to Adventure Time: Pixel Princess and Crystal Cadets, but she is the artist of the highly anticipated magical girl comic Zodiac Starforce from Dark Horse Comics. You can check out my advance review of Zodiac Starforce #1 right here. Paulina gracious took the time to sit down with Major Spoilers and talk about the beautiful world she has created inside the pages of Zodiac Starforce and what readers of all ages can expect from the series.
Today is an exciting day for Tess Fowler! With the publication of Rat Queens #11 Tess steps into the role of series artist in one of the coolest fantasy book on the stands. Fowler’s work has been featured in Rat Queens Special: Braga, Charmed, Broken Bones and her webcomic The Rascals. Major Spoilers was fortunate to get the time to ask Tess Fowler some questions about working with writer and series creator Kurtis J. Wiebe, drawing the amazing ladies of Rat Queens and breaking into the industry.
Tini Howard is a fangirl, a Valkyrie and a comic book writer! Tini has contributed to The Oath Anthology, Magdalena: the Seventh Sacrament and the upcoming Poseidon IX One-Shot. Plus, Tini is also a part of The Secret Loves of Geek Girls Anthology which not only features a prose piece by Ms. Howard, but legendary writer Margaret Atwood’s comic strip debut. Major Spoilers managed to catch up with Tini on her way back from a convention and in between scripting sessions to chat fanfiction, romance comics and the pressures of collaborating with an idol.
