With no local comic book shop in the immediate area (I have to drive at least three hours to find one that is half way decent), I’m always pleased to see that there are stores out there that are doing everything they can and more to bring customers in.  The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award nominees have been announced, and it looks like a great list.

More information on DC’s Doc Savage series trickles out

During the Wiz World Philly DC Nation Panel, DC EIC Dan Didio gave a bit more news on the upcoming Doc Savage series coming out of the company.

Didio then revealed that DC would bring back the classic pulp hero Doc Savage via a monthly series to be written by Brian Azarello (“100 Bullets”) and drawn by Rags Morales. Morales said that the series will bring Savage into the DCU, though it will take place in an alternate universe where he will work and interact alongside such classic characters as Blackhawk and Will Eisner’s The Spirit. The world Savage lives in will also be a blend of our modern era and the classic ‘30s pulp era he comes from (“cell phones and tommy guns” as DiDio put it). No news was given about a release date yet.

Glad it is a monthly, glad it is being set on a different Multiverse Earth, glad they aren’t trying to bring back the last DC Comics Doc Savage series.

About That Spirit Movie…

thespiritpicon.jpg

Frank Miller’s take on Will Eisner’s The Spirit was much hyped and ballyhooed across all forms of media leading up to the big Christmas day release.  With that much publicity, it must have done gangbusters at the box office, right?

Turns out, The Spirit has only made $10.3 million since its debut, placing it firmly at the number nine spot for the week.  Yikes!  Movies like Yes Man and The Day the Earth Stood Still, which have been out for a couple of weeks, still did better over the weekend than Frank Miller’s flick.

I didn’t see it, did you?   I’m sure the Interweb Nets and early reviews did nothing to help this movie along, but perhaps it will do better in the the home rental market.

Quote of the Week: Frank Miller on The Spirit

onset_miller_spirit.jpg

“Will Eisner was my mentor, and The Spirit was so awesome a property that I at first thought I was not worthy to do it. And then I couldn’t think of anybody else who was, so I decided that I was the right man for the job.”
