TOP TEN: Batman Team-Ups

With the upcoming release of The Dark Knight Rises, the much-anticipated ending of the Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy, we at Major Spoilers have been discussing what we believe to be the most awesome Batman moments of the character’s nearly 90 years of history.  Stephen and I clashed over what the best Batman story EVER would be (I say ‘Joker’s Laughing Fish,’ Stephen’s votes have lately been turning towards the Court of Owls, and Rodrigo likes Justice League Unlimited Bats) but we agree on one thing:  The guy gets around!  I guess when you haven’t got super-powers, one has to get by with a little help from one’s friends…

TOP TEN: Top Ten Northstar Moments

Or – “His Original Costume Is The Only One That Isn’t Awful…”

With the recent announcement that Jean-Paul “Northstar” Beaubier would marry his long-time (you should excuse the expression) beau, Kyle, I started thinking about the long and illustrious career of Canada’s fastest man alive.  From his earliest days with Alpha Flight to his current stay on Utopia, Jean-Paul has a long and storied career of heroism, haughty attitude and terrible costumes, but I imagine many of us only know him as Marvel’s first openly-gay superhero.  Seems to me that it’s time to right that particular wrong…

10 Famous People Who Could Be Superheroes

The sad fact of the matter is that we live in a world where being exposed to radioactivity will kill you rather than allow you to grow 50 feet tall and shoot energy beams from your eyes. But what if we didn’t? What if we lived in the crazy world of comic book superheroes? Who, then, would the heroes of this world be? We could certainly guess, but fortunately we don’t have to. Since comics are always pretty specific about who gets to become a superhero. The signs are there, you just have to put it all together.

Top Comics: Justice League #1 earns top spot in direct market

Though it was only out for one day, the preorders for DC’s Justice League were enough to earn the title the top spot of all comics sold in the direct market for August 2011.  Close behind was Flashpoint #5, which wrapped up the Flashpoint Universe and kicked off DC’s New 52.

TOP TEN: Surprise Guest Voices on Phineas and Ferb

Hey! What’cha doin’? It’s that time of the week where go link baiting for eyeballs and click-throughs in an attempt to get more of you to visit the website. Today, it’s another round of guest stars lending their voices to animated television shows.

If you haven’t seen Disney Channel’s Phineas and Ferb, you are missing out on one of the best produced, best written, best scored, best use of continuity in a series, and really any other category you can think of show. It’s that good. There isn’t a day that goes by that my son and I aren’t rolling on the floor laughing at the antics of two step-brothers and their summer adventures. And every once in a while, I stop and say “That voice sounds familiar… maybe too familiar…”

Fire up your Top Ten-inators, cause I know what we’re going to do today!

(I know what you’re thinking “Aren’t I a little old to be watching a cartoon show?” No. No I’m not.)

TOP TEN: Reasons I’m Glad I’m Not At SDCC ’11

Or – “I Didn’t Want Those  Stoopid Grapes, Anyway!”

During a recent issue of the Major Spoilers Podcast, Stephen, Rodrigo and myself had a discussion about big comic conventions and the pros and cons (heh) of attending.  The conversation turned to my thoughts on the sheer enormousness of San Diego Comicon, and the conclusion that it is probably not for me.

Shall I list the reasons why?

Well, I don’t see whyyyyyyyy…  NOT.

On the Next Major Spoilers Podcast: Top Ten

This week, on the Major Spoilers Podcast, Rodrigo, Matthew and Stephen take a look at Top Ten from Alan Moore.

Top Ten Volume One
Writer: Alan Moore
Artist: Gene Ha, Zander Cannon

The story revolves around the day-to-day lives of the police officers at the 10th Precinct Police Station and is similar in tone to classic television police dramas like Hill Street Blues, which Moore has described as an influence. The book also addresses a wide range of prejudices and issues, but with a science-fiction twist; monsters, robots and fantasy creatures often face the bigotry and problems faced by real-world human minorities.

The series is noted for its comic-book references and visual “sight gags” relating to the genre. For example, a caped street-corner watch-vendor uses a cardboard sign advertising “signal watches”, and a hot-dog vendor cooks his wares with heat vision. One plotline involves a boy-band called Sidekix whose hit single was called “Holy Broken Hearts”. Likewise, most advertising, signage and graffiti in the Top 10 universe contains references to the world of comic books and super powers (e.g. a clothing store called “The Phonebooth”) and crowd scenes usually feature many characters from sci-fi and comic books.

TOP TEN: Worst Costume Redesigns

Recently, DC Comics announced they would be “relaunching” their entire line of comics, with new number ones. Along with these new number ones, will be a line-wide redesign for every character. Many of these redesigns have already been criticized, so instead of hating on a bunch of costumes from comic books that haven’t even been published yet, I will be taking a stroll down memory lane, in the hopes of digging up redesigns that should never be forgotten. Join me, will you?
