In 2009 the US cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama was boarded and hijacked by Somali pirates, and this is the true story of Captain Phillips, his crew, and their struggle for survival. It is directed by Bourne veteran Paul Greengrass, and stars Hollywood’s favorite Every-Man, Tom Hanks. Forget your fun-loving Caribbean pirates, this is a taut thriller, with two stunning performances at the core.
The Walt Disney Studios sent Major Spoilers the first trailer for Saving Mr. Banks.
Some of you may be too young to remember the great James Stewart Harvey adaptation from 1950. If you haven’t seen it, don’t rush to put it on your Netflix list just yet, as Steven Spielberg has announced his next project will be a new take on the classic play by Mary Chase.
Who will play Elwood P. Dowd? Some are thinking Tom Hanks would be perfect for the part, although Jim Carey might make a better man on the verge who sees invisible six-foot rabbits. While big name stars will all probably jump at the chance to play the lead character, it might be better to go with an unknown.
The film goes into pre-production now, with no release date announced.
Universal pictures has picked up the rights to develop a movie based on Mattel’s action figure, Major Matt Mason. While another toy movie may not sound like a big deal, with Tom Hanks starring in the movie, it will probably get a lot more attention than the Stretch Armstrong movie.
The toy line originated in 1966; Mason led an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. The toy was a hit in the buildup to the first manned moon mission. Mattel retired the line in the 1970s.
Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce with Graham Yost writing the script.
