REVIEW: Stormwatch #0

Or – “I Just Hope It’s Better Than The First Stormwatch #0…”

I have fallen behind in most of my comics reading over the summer, as reality has knocked a hole in what I laughing refer to as my spare time.  Worse than that, I can’t remember anything that happened in Stormwatch since about issue #4.  Hopefully that won’t damage my enjoyment of this #0 flashback issue, ’cause your Major Spoilers review awaits!

REVIEW: Grifter #7

Grifter #1 was one of the first comics that I read.  I picked it up because I wanted to read about a character I had never heard about.  I originally fell in love with the series, but lately there has been a lack of character development and seeing the same ethereal baddies in every issue has become stale.  Midnighter from Stormwatch makes a cameo in this issue, but can Grifter #7 help revive this title? The creative team announcements continue to roll out of DC Comics, which seems to be a way the company is keeping things relatively fresh for new readers.  With Jeff Lemire moving to Justice League Dark, where does that leave Peter Milligan?

NEW 52 REVIEW: Stormwatch #1

Or – “Will It Work Without Warren?”


Younger Spoilerites may not recall that Stormwatch began as part of the Image Comics revolution in 1993, but the title probably found its most critical acclaim under the pen of Warren Ellis with a run that eventually mutated into The Authority.  Part of the reason that book became famous was it’s willingness (and, honestly, it’s ability) to look at certain archetypes of comics history in a new light.  Will new characters based on Superman and Batman be as much fun in a world that already has the real thing?

Dynamic Forces Secret Invasion Variant Cover

It’s the 90s all over again kiddies, with variant covers coming fast and furious for titles and reprints. The latest variant comes from Dynamic Forces and Marvel for next week’s Secret Invasion #1 by Mel Rubi.

Comic fans old and new know Mel Rubi’s art from the immense variety of titles and characters that he has drawn for the past two decades. Mel’s countless credits include hit Marvel titles such as Uncanny X-Men, Excalibur and Wolverine, as well as Image titles Grifter, Stormwatch and Deathblow, and for Dark Horse, Star Wars: The Bounty Hunters – Scoundrel’s Wages. Most recently, Mel completed the smash hit crossover series, Spider-Man / Red Sonja.

Looks like there are other variants on the way from Dynamic Forces, and we’ll keep you posted on that… no really, we will.
