Anyone who saw the video excerpts from the Twilight panel at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con knew there was a huge fanbase waiting to jump all over this movie when it opened. No suprise, every flick that premired this weeked paled next to Twilight. Even Quantum of Solace, in its second week, couldn’t slay the film that is going to be a huge franchise for Summit Entertainment.
Quantum of Solace did two things this past weekend; it sent High School Musical 3 a packing, and it broke opening weekend records for the franchise. Moving the latest installment of the Harry Potter series to the summer, freeing up the debut date for Solace, had to play a part in the movie’s success. The Quantum of Solace has done well over seas, where it’s brought in $252 million since its debut two weeks ago. While the movie should still hold strong over the Thanksgiving week, I’m wondering how much it will suffer when Twilight hits theaters this weekend.
I really thought High School Muscial 3 would have reigned at the box office for another couple of weeks, but the tweener film fell to the number three spot behind Role Models and the animated feature Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa. Expect Quantum of Solace to decimate everyone on November 14.
With the ability to review comics comes a renewed desire to read comics, and I was really looking forward to the conclusion of this story. It’s been an interesting tale that once again put Wolverine, aka, Logan, in to a historical situation. The story is about love found and lost, revenge and seeking a measure of solace. And it would only work in a Wolverine story, and I think Vaughan knew that as well!
