Review: Gotham City Sirens #2

GCS_Cv2PICON.jpg

Issue one of this new monthly series, which focuses on Gotham Girls Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, closed with Selina Kyle purchasing an abandoned animal shelter for the trio to share as their new hideout (for more on how the fabulous threesome got together, pick up issue one). Once the deal is sealed however, the women double cross Selina and spray her with one of Ivy’s powders to put her at “ease” for an interrogation. What do they want to know? The true identity of Batman.

Natalie Portman joins Thor cast

Here’s a bit of breaking news – Natalie Portman has just been signed to appear in the upcoming Thor movie directed by Kenneth Branagh. Portman will be playing Jane Foster, love interest to the Norse god.

From the Wiki

At first she was a nurse for Donald Blake, eventually developing feelings for him, not knowing that Blake and Thor were one and the same. The love triangle went on for a while, until Thor revealed his secret identity to Jane, and in return even took her to Asgard with him. There, Jane was briefly granted immortality and the power of gods until after failing to pass the tests of courage set forth by Odin. At this point, stripped of her new powers, Jane left Asgard to returned to Earth. Jane and Thor eventually broke up, and she later met her current husband Dr. Keith Kincaid and had a son with him. For a time, Odin even wiped the memories Jane had of Thor away from her, but she eventually gained them back. After that, Jane was occasionally seen assisting the Avengers when the need arose.

The movie is still scheduled to hit theaters May 20, 2011.

Now, it’s your turn to talk.

Review: Irredeemable #3

Irredeemable_03_picon.jpg

Three issues in and we’re still no closer to discovering what ultimately made The Plutonian snap and switch sides from good to bad.  We’ve learned about his love life, and her betrayal of his secret identity, which makes me wonder what Mark Waid has in store for readers next.

Irredeemable #2 Sells Out Before Stores Open

Mark Waid’s Irredeemable #2 arrives in stores today (May 6, 2009) and even before the stores open, Boom! Studios has announced the issue has completely sold out.  So if you want to read what happens next (and it is a doozy, as readers discover how the Plutonian’s secret identity was revealed), you best get down to your store today.

Or, wait until mid-June when Boom! gets the reprint (with variant cover) to direct market shops around the country.

“The fan reaction to IRREDEEMABLE has been unlike anything that I have ever experienced,” said BOOM! Studios Marketing and Sales Director Chip Mosher. “With IRREDEEMABLE we have an indie superhero book going mainstream.”

Review: Superman #686

First Day on the Job

superman686picon.jpg

Look! Up in the sky!  Is it a bird?

Nooooo.

Is it a plane?

Nooooo.

Is it Superman?

Noooo.

That’s usually how the conversation with my two year old goes when we’re goofing around on the way to school in the morning.  That also appears to be the conversation the citizens of Metropolis are having as there’s a new hero in town buzzing the skies above the city.

Warren Ellis’ Red to Screen

Red, the three-issue Warren Ellis graphic novel, is set to make its way to the big screen, thanks to a deal by Summit Entertainment.

The three-issue comic series, published in 2003, told the story of a former black-ops CIA agent now living a quiet life in retirement until the day a high-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his secret identity compromised and his love interest in danger, the man must reassemble his old team to figure out who is out to get them. The book was written by Warren Ellis, whose comic “Ocean” is set up at Warner Bros., and illustrated by Cully Hamner.

The Hollywood Reporter says it took nearly two years for Summit to get the rights from DC/Wildstorm, even though DC will have some hand in the project.

Hero History: Ultra Boy

Or – “Han Solo With Superhuman Strength…”

In his brilliant series “I Should Write The Legion,” Christopher Bird pointed out the inherent awesomeness of today’s entrant, the local Rimborian boy who made good.  He’s a rogue who went straight, the Legion’s most street-smart member, and although he may not be a Rhodes Scholar, he’s still a clever kid who knows what really makes the world go round.  As tough as Mon-El, as strong as Tom Welling, as fast as Dawnstar, he also has a very specific weakness (if you can call having Kryptonian level powers a weakness) in that he has to use them one at a time.  This makes him sneakier and much more conservative than most of the Legion’s combat members, and has also served to give him more humanity than Mon or Mr. Welling could ever imagine, as he’s only immune to harm SOMETIMES.  Possessor of one of the greatest “should-be-ugly-but-still-somehow-works” costumes in superhero history, two-time Legion leader, and the member who spends the most time in some sort of legal trouble, he’s also one of the most loyal Legionnaires, offering his “hit-first-cause-there’ll-be-trouble-later” brand of justice throughout every incarnation of the Legion thus far.  This, then, is your Major Spoiler Hero History of Jo Nah of Rimbor…  Ultra Boy!
