NYCC’09: Image Comics Complete Schedule Released

JerseyGods01_NYCC_Var.jpg

My jealousy for those able to attend all the great comic book convention continues to grow whenever I see the panel, signing, and booth schedules for the various publishers.  Image Comics has sent its rundown, and there are plenty of things for Image fans to do this weekend.

Throughout the convention the Image Comics booth will be home to signings galore, a convention exclusive cover of the superhero debut JERSEY GODS and an array of creators including Rob Liefeld (YOUNGBLOOD), Whilce Portacio (SPAWN), Frank Cho (LIBERTY MEADOWS), Richard Starkings (ELEPHANTMEN), Glen Brunswick (JERSEY GODS), Josh Williamson (JOHNNY MONSTER) and Vinny Navarette (DEAR DRACULA).

Major Spoilers Quote of the Week: Webcomics

halfpixelguys.jpg

“I know there are plenty of web comic artists who are able to subsist on the income they make from their website, but they aren’t making money from their comics; they’re making money from merchandise. Not to belittle web-only comic artists, but when their income is derived from t-shirts, it makes them salesmen first, artists second.”

– Neil Swaab

Oh man, talk about opening mouth and inserting foot.  This lead to all sorts of reactions including this well thought out post by Jeph Jacques, which ultimately lead to Mr. Swaab issuing a public apology.

Oh and hey, those webcomic things have a bunch of panels at the New York Comic Con, featuring many of those webcomic gurus featured in the image above.

New York Comic Con Announces Panels

nycc09_logo_ff.jpg

The minds behind the New York Comic Con have released its current list of panels for the show.  It’s quite a list, and there are panels attendees will really want to check out.

Here’s a sampling of the panels I found interesting:

BOOM! Studios: BIG! BOLD! BOOM! Join Mark Waid, Ross Richie, and Chip Mosher as they run down the most exciting new projects at BOOM! Including a special announcement by Mark Waid that is sure to make your head explode! (Friday, 2:15-3:15)

The Business of Webcomics! LIVE!: Watch PVP Online’s Scott Kurtz take thematic suggestions from the crowd as he, on stage, creates a brand new online property while Penny Arcade’s Robert Khoo simultaneously turns these concepts into monetizeable business models. Take notes! (Friday, 3:15-4:15)

TMNT: Quarter Century of Artistic Evolution: In 1984, TMNT creators Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman published their first black and white TMNT comic book. Since then, the Turtles have gone from underground hit to worldwide phenomenon. A panel of Mirage artists — led and moderated by Steve Murphy — will walk fans through the artistic evolution of the Turtles. Artists Eric Talbot, Jim Lawson, Michael Dooney and Steve Lavigne have been with Mirage since the beginning and will give true and new TMNT fans an insider look at the art behind the beloved characters. What is their inspiration? Who is their favorite character? What generation of TMNT do they associate with most and why? How do art and story come together? And what might be next? (Friday, 5:45-6:45)

History of Superhero Movies: Past, Present, and Future: Comic books started out modestly eight decades ago, printed on pulp paper and appealing to a very young audience. Today, comics are American mythology with a broad ranging readership, with legendary characters and stories that have transcended time and inspired generations of readers and artists in all different mediums. Film and entertainment historian Eddy Friedfeld analyzes the comic book movie, how far the genre has come and where it is heading: From the innovative Fleischer animated Superman cartoons and the Columbia Batman and Superman serials of the 1940’s to George Reeves and Christopher Reeve’s Men of Steel, to the modern collection of Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney and Bale Batmans, Spider-Man trilogy, and a new crop of cinema superheroes, including Spiderman, Iron Man, The Spirit, The Hulk, and Hancock who have taken the genre to new levels of entertainment and insight. (Sunday, 11:15am-12:15pm)

Head over to the New York Comic Con website for the complete rundown.

Drawing with Water

This is both awesome and insane at the same time.  You’ll have to watch all the way to the end to see what the heck is happening, and when you see the reveal, your jaw drops.

All this from the graphic novel Alan’s War:  The Memories of G.I. Alan Cope.

Across a generation, a deep friendship blossomed between Alan Cope and author/artist Emmanuel Guibert. From it, Alan’s War was born – a graphic novel that is a deeply personal and moving experience, straight from the heart of the Greatest Generation – a unique piece of WWII literature and a ground-breaking graphic memoir.

Thanks to Scott Kurtz for that heads up.
