SDCC’11: House of Night officially announced (told ya)

A couple of weeks ago, Dark Horse Comics began circulating a number of teaser images for items to be announced at Preview Night during the San Diego Comic Con.  The first, featured the word CAST, and a crescent moon, and a little digging led us to believe Dark Horse was bringing House of Night to comic book fans.  We were right…

House of Night will be co-written by Kent Dallan, with P.C. Cast and her daughter, Kristen and arrives November 9, 2011.

Complete press release, after the jump.

MOVIE: The Darkness headed to the big screen

With the success of the video games, and the general vibe of the story, I’m really surprised it took this long for Top Cow’s The Darkness series to get picked up for a movie deal.

At least that is what the LA Times is reporting.  We’ll know more at the San Diego Comic Con as Mandeville Films should announce the movie deal during one of the many panels scheduled for the show (our money is on the Top Cow panel).

The graphic novels center on a mobster named Jackie Estacado who discovers he has inherited a murderous power known as “the darkness” that allows him to summon creatures from another realm. Estacado must then find a way to tame the power while vanquishing his enemies within the crime family in which he operates.

There have been a number of stories over the last couple of weeks regarding comics being picked up by movie studios, and it doesn’t look like H’wood is tired of the genre yet.

SDCC’11: Green Goblin getting Marvel Select Figure treatment

Diamond Select Toys has announced that the company is revisiting old Spider-Man foes, and have decided that the Green Goblin will be the next character to get the Marvel Select Figure treatment.

The new Green Goblin figure is based on the Marvel Milestones statue of the character that Diamond Select Toys released back in 2004, featuring a more modern take on the villain than our initial, classic interpretation. When not posed on hie Goblin Glider base, he stands 7 inches tall and features Marvel Select’s standard 16 points of articulation.

This probably has nothing to do with the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man movie, but it is going to be one of those figures/statues/toys that will look awesome on the shelf.

Kevin Keller gets ongoing on 2012

The New York Times is reporting that Archie Comics will give Kevin Keller, the company’s openly gay character, an ongoing series beginning in 2012.

The series, titled Kevin Keller, will follow a four-issue mini-series starring Kevin that began in July and has started filling out his background, including his relationship with his father, who serves in the military and is supportive of his son’s desire to follow in his footsteps. Like those for the other Archie characters, Kevin’s series will deal with his life in high school.

According to Dan Parent, the creator of Kevin, the student will expand his role at Riverdale High by becoming the class president, and deal with even more adversity than before.  There are also plans to incorporate Kevin into the Life with Archie series, taking a look at Kevin’s relationships down the road.

More news about Kevin, and the rest of the Archie gang should be forthcoming at the Archie Panel taking place this weekend at CCI: San Diego.

SDCC’11: LEGO and DC Comics team

While I liked what LEGO did with the Batman sets from a few years ago, I was always hoping for more from the toy company.  Looks like that wish is coming true as DC and LEGO have expanded their relationships allowing LEGO to access the complete library of comic book characters and stories to launch DCU Super Heroes.

The multi-year licensing deal, made through Warner Bros. Consumer Products, will start rolling out the new line in January, starting with 13 characters, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and villains the Joker, Bane, Harley Quinn and Lex Luthor.

Those of you at the San Diego Comic Con will want to circle like vultures around the Warner Bros., LEGO, and DC Booths, as 3,000 Batman and Green Lantern exclusive minifigs will be given away to fans.  With 130,000 attendees, those figures are going to go fast, and will more than likely fetch a pretty price on eBay starting next week.

The LEGO Super Heroes line will arrive in January 2012.

Though the movie is a way off and the teaser trailer got yanked, Entertainment Weekly was able to debut new images of The Amazing Spider-Man’s new costume.  While those are nice, what about the movie toy tie-ins?  Looks like USA Today was given the scoop with images of the new action figure set to debut this week at the San Diego Comic Con.
