Review: Green Lantern #43

It Begins…

GL_Cv43picon.jpg

There has been plenty of lead up to the much hyped Blackest Night series, as the Green Lantern titles have unveiled nearly all of the Corps involved in the event. Green Lantern #43 gets the Prologue banner treatment, and is a great lead in to the mega-event.

Advanced Review: Irredeemable #1

Irredeemable_picon.jpg

We’ve seen Mark Waid write the hero as bad guy before.  His take on heroes as villains in Kingdom Come shows the hero stepping over the bounds as a revolt against their older counterparts, and trying to figure their place in a changing world.  And while there are others who have written openly violent tales of the good guy doing bad things, no one has ever stopped to ponder the question, “What made this person evil?”   In the case of Irredeemable, Waid dives into the answer and brings readers along for the ride down that dark path.

Is Promethea Getting Absolute Treatment

prometheus.jpg

It just might be the case if you read between the words and spaces in a very vague JH Williams III post on his blog.

Going through some Promethea files for reasons that will be made clear in a later post and thought I would put of some these into blogs.

For those not familiar with the series – to the Wiki!

Serialized in 32 issues on an irregular schedule from 1999 to 2005, the series explores Alan Moore’s ideas about art and magic, combining elements of superhero action, metaphysical theorizing, and psychedelic revelation, all focused on the adventures of Promethea, a metafictional character that possesses magical power over the real world. Promethea is also notable for wide-ranging experimentation in visual style and storytelling technique on the part of Williams and Moore.

Lately I’ve fallen in love with these omnibus and Absolue Editions being put out by companies.  I fell in love with Sandman only after the first Absolute Edition was released, and have been keeping my eyes open for other series to receive the same treatment.

Review: Batman and the Outsiders #14

Riddle me this:  When is Batman and the Outsiders not Batman and the Outsiders?

outsiders14picon.jpg

The answer of course Dear Reader, is when the issue features neither Batman nor the Outsiders.  But there in lies the juicy bits of the issue.  With the “death” of Batman, there has been chaos throughout Gotham City.  And while there are those that are scrambling to fill in the void, there are few who are willing to step up with a new plan.  Someone like Batman’s daughter.

Marvel Sneak Peek: Eternals Annual #1

01picon.jpg

It’s a knock down drag out fight between the Young Gods and the Eternals, in the pages of the Eternals Annual #1.  I doubt this is going to be a whole Death of the Young Gods saga, but the sneak peek Marvel sent to Major Spoilers sure make it look like someone will live, someone will die, and the universe will never be the same…AGAIN!

Review: Immortal Iron Fist #17

Or – “All The Hatred May Be Somewhat Premature…”

IF2_1.jpg

Brubaker and Fraction’s run on Iron Fist did what every relaunch really hopes to do: revitalize the character, revive interest in his stories, and add depth and versimilitude to the Iron Fist stories to date.  So much so that, when this new creative team was announced, pull list orders on the book (at Gatekeeper Hobbies, Huntoon and Gage, Topeka! Ask about our 70′s Vampirella black and whites!) fell by nearly half, and one of our more sardonic Spoilerites was heard to opine that the book will be cancelled within 18 issues.  Of course, it should be noted that some wits said that when they heard of the Iron Fist relaunch in the first place, and it took word of mouth to build the title up to where it was last issue.  Now, we’ve hit what Marvel and DC editorial love to call “a perfect jumping-on point for the title,” even though it seems that most of the readers I interact with either want to start with #1 or buy trade paperbacks.  Either way, it’s time to take a look at the new face of the Fist.
