RUMOR: Fialkov walks because DC wants to kill John Stewart?

News broke earlier this week that Joshua Hale Fialkov would be leaving “Green Lantern Corps” and “Red Lanterns” but the writer has spoken and it has led to speculation by some on the Internet on the nature of his departure.

REVIEW: Red Lanterns #0

Red Lanterns are like Green Lanterns, but instead of willpower, they’re fueled by rage and instead of protecting the universe, they spit up burning blood on people. Red Lanterns #0 tells the story of their leader, Atrocitus – but will it make this Major Spoilers reviewer sputter in anger?

REVIEW: Red Lanterns #5

Or – “The Blood Puking Will Make For An Interesting Animated Series…”

When DC relaunched their universe last fall, they included a little something for everyone, from furthest reaches of their massive character library.  Of all the relaunch titles, the one that appealed to me the least was probably Red Lanterns, a book that is paradoxically written by a writer whose work I have really enjoyed on other titles.  With the fifth issue of the new order, I am ready to dip my toe into the sea of burning blood-vomit to see if my initial dismissal of Atrocitus and his minions was too hasty…

More Lantern comics on the way from DC Comics

Yesterday, I made the claim that DC Comics was going to get behind Green Lantern in a big way in 2011, and a few hours later they proved me correct by announcing a new Lantern series.

The isn’t necessarily a new announcement, as we learned about it a while ago, but the publisher finally made the commitment to get Peter Milligan to write the Red Lanterns series.

“But after Geoff Johns asked if I was interested in writing The Red Lantern Corps I started thinking about Atrocitus and his anger. Because it’s not just anger. It is RAGE. A crimson red rage that still consumes him after all this time. And when you think about it, the Manhunter massacre happened an awful long time ago. Eons ago. Okay, you’d never get over something like that. But Atrocitus’ rageŠit hasn’t weakened. It is just as immense and awesome as it was all those centuries ago. I wanted to know why. I wanted to know how.”

DC didn’t announce the launch date for the series, but I’ll put my money on the second quarter of the year.
