From Rorschach to Freddy Krueger, Jackie Earle Haley is taking on the role of the the gruesome Freddy Krueger in the reboot of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. “Looking at his performance in ‘Watchmen,’ here’s a guy playing a character under a mask yet you feel tremendous empathy for him,” said Bayer of the actor. “And in Nightmare,’ he is going to be under prosthetic make-up. You have to feel something for the character. The greatest villains are multi-dimensional and I think he will bring that to the character.” The movie begins filming May 5, 2009 in Chicago. via

The Hollywood Reporter has Wesley Strick signed on to write the update to the Freddy Kruger franchise. The new project will keep the high school setting and delve deeper in the psychology of nightmares and Krueger himself. The plan is to have a dark tone. The company hopes to have the movie ready for the 25th anniversary of the original. Strick has previously penned Arachnophobia and Cape Fear. via THR
