30 Days of Night sequel now shooting in Vancouver

IDW publisher Chris Ryall let everyone know via his Twitter feed, that the sequel to 30 Days of Night has started shooting in Vancouver.  The followup will feature Keile Sanchez playing Stella Oleson, who is tracking down the vampire queen responsible for the destruction of the Alaskan town featured in the first film.

Don’t expect this movie to be rushed to the theater, as “30 Days of Night: Dark Days” is expected to be a direct-to-DVD release.

Jim Carey takes on four roles in Disney’s A Christmas Carol

I think the animation looks wonderful in this movie, and the facial expressions and textures have come a long way since my day in the animation world. Disney sent Major Spoilers a peek behind the curtain of the upcoming movie that arrives next week.

Ebenezer Scrooge (JIM CARREY) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (GARY OLDMAN) and his cheery nephew (COLIN FIRTH). But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey revealing truths Old Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late.

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol opens nationwide on November 6, 2009.

Chi-Chian makes its way to the movie screen

Framelight has announced it has acquired the rights the six-part comic book “Chi-Chian” to adapt the story for the big screen.

The fairy tale-tinged “Chi-Chian” is set in a dystopian New York — the city has lost its independence and become a prefecture of Japan — and centers on a seemingly ordinary young woman who has been tapped as a heroine and must fight samurais, robots and zombies to protect her loved ones.

The series is written by musician Aurello Voltaire.  No word on who will write the movie adaptation, but Jeffry Erb and Robert Robinson Jr. are set to produce.

Doc Savage movie finds writer

I’m really torn over the announcement that the Doc Savage movie now has writers on board.  On the one hand, I’m super excited about seeing a new Doc Savage movie hit the big screen, as the 1975 version really blew (for many reasons) and caused more than one career to crash and burn.  On the other hand, writers are Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are producing.  Don’t get me wrong, I think the duo are exceptionally talented – especially when it comes to Star Trek.  However, these are also the brains behind Transfomers 2, and after that experience, anytime I see their names attached to a project a red flag goes up.

Fortunately, it looks like they won’t be writing the Doc Savage script.  Instead, those duties fall to Shane Black, of Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang fame.  And it looks like he’s going to do it right.

I did inquire if they were modernizing the character. I asked this with dread in my belly, and Shane passed the test by saying the character can not be separated from the 30s. This is correct. Right now, he is preparing to write the script. He has decided that Doc needs to have his Fabulous Five. It will be an original DOC SAVAGE story that attempts to encapsulate the feeling of the whole collection of Lester Dent’s work.

Well my hopes have been raised, and it’s great news to kick off the week.

UPDATE: Ain’t It Cool News is now stating Orci and Kurtzman are not producing the Doc Savage film, but instead the producers are Neal Moritz and Ori Marmur.  Makes me feel a bit better about the film.  Now let’s go find us a Doc Savage!

DVD Review: Astérix et Obélix contre César (Asterix & Obelix vs. Caesar)

asterixPICON.jpg

Bonjour class! Today we’re taking a look at a French film filled with action, adventure, romance, magic, and a lot of Roman-bashing. The film, Astérix et Obélix contre César (or Asterix & Obelix vs. Caesar) is the first in a string of adaptations based on the classic graphic novels by René Goscinny, and is also one of the most expensive live-action films to come out of France. As an added challenge, we’re going to take a look at it in its original language, partially to broaden our outlook on foreign films, and partially because the only copy I could find was an old VHS that did not include English dubs or subtitles. Make sure you take notes, because there may be a pop quiz afterwards.

(I’m totally kidding about the pop quiz.)

Ninja Turtles move to Nickelodeon

Viacom has purchased the world wide rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise for a real steal at $60 million. Nickelodeon is now in the process of developing a new animated television series, and a feature film to be released through Paramount Pictures.

Its goal with TMNT is to reintroduce the franchise to existing and potential fans across various media platforms. The deal also gives Nick all merchandising rights, and the company will continue to work with the franchise’s longtime partner, Playmates Toys.

Both the feature film and animated series are scheduled to arrive in 2012.

Black Lightning trailer flies, but not with the Black Lightning you’re thinking of

The trailer for Black Lightning hit the Intardwebz some time this past week, and even though it isn’t the DC hero flying about on the screen, the sight of a black Volga flying through the skies being used to fight crime is something to see.  Too bad, I don’t understand a word of it.

This is a story of Moscow University’s student who becomes the owner of ordinary from the first sight, been-used, but… able to fly “Volga” car. With this car he will be able to not only avoid Moscow traffic jams, but unexpectedly for himself turn to city’s defender, mysterious fighter against Evil.

And Sinestro is…

The rumor mill is running wild following a flurry of name drops and what ifs that came out of H’wood this past weekend.  The latest is the rumor that Jackie Earle Haley (Bad News Bears, Watchmen, and Freddy Krueger) is up for the role of Sinestro in the upcoming Green Lantern movie.  I can see the Haley as Sinestro, although he is a tad on the short side, and I was really expecting someone like Willem Dafoe or a Jude Law type to fill the part.

And since we are on big on rumors this morning, it sounds like Warner Bros. might also be trying to get a Superman cameo in the film as part of the whole “it worked for Marvel, let’s make it work for us” schtick.
