After reading this week’s trade paperback review for the Major Spoilers podcast, I’ve been thinking about the tropes of pulp and superhero fiction as regards the differentiation between “Hero” and “Sidekick.” One of the biggest problems with the Seth Rogen ‘Green Hornet’ movie from my perspective came in the treatment of the Hornet as a dipstick bumbler of Maxwell Smart proportions, turning the responsibility for most all of the heroism, gadgetry and combat over to sidekick Kato. Gregg Taylor from the Decoder Ring Theater Podcast sent me a letter the other day letting me know that they completed a Kickstarter campaign last summer to bring fans a video version of The Red Panda. The first three video are done in the motion comic style of joining Dean Kotz’s artwork from the comic series with the voice cast from the podcast. http://youtu.be/NoZWbzXltQs The Mask of the Red Panda trade paperback arrives in the February/March timeframe from IDW Publishing.
This is a bit of news I’m really happy about. For years I, and many of the Major Spoilers Crew have been fans of Decoder Ring Theater’s Red Panda Adventures. When the tales of the Red Panda got the digital treatment from Monkeybrain Comics, I devoured every issue. Now IDW Publishing and Monkeybrain Comics are giving Red Panda the print treatment.
If you haven’t listened to the Red Panda Adventures, you are missing out on some great audio action stories. Greg Taylor is jumping media, and has brought the Red Panda to comic books. Monkeybrain Comics sent us a sneak peek of the second issue that arrives in digital format on March 27, 2013.
