Munchkin Land #22: Super Munchkin!

Munchkin is a dedicated deck card game by Steve Jackson Games, written by Steve Jackson and illustrated by John Kovalic, that has a humorous take on role-playing games.

In this installment: Fly through the city. Smash the villains. Backstab your teammates and grab their gadgets. Munchkin has parodied the classic dungeon, the kung-fu warrior, the space epic, and the creatures of the night. Now, it’s the superheroes’ turn. Be a Mutant, an Exotic, a Mystic, or a Techno. The higher your level, the more powers you can have. Battle dastardly masterminds, devastating monsters, and invading aliens from the next dimension – from the wimpy Bucketman all the way up to Big Ol’ Planet Eater Guy himself – and take their stufff. With the Electro-Mento-Hat, the Telezapinator, and the (jet-powered) Pogo Stick, no foe can stand before you. Super Munchkin is a stand-alone game, which (of course) can be combined with other Munchkin games. Designed by Steve Jackson and illustrated by John Kovalic, this one is destined to rule the world. Mwahahaha. Now in full color.

Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: It’s Probably All Superman’s Fault Edition

During a recent viewing of Gokaiger, the child suddenly realized that all the main characters were meant to be aliens, and moreover, aliens from FIVE DIFFERENT WORLDS! The idea that there would be creatures that look exactly like humans from Japan, much less multiple planets full of them, suddenly struck her as questionable for the first time. As a fan of Star Trek, I have long since taken it for granted that all the aliens will be bipedal with rubbery foreheads and I’m kind of fine with that, given the scarcity of non-humanoids with SAG cards. Strangely, though, even in comics where casting issues shouldn’t apply, we don’t see many truly alien aliens. Tellus counts, but Shadow Lass is essentially a powder blue version of Kirk’s Orion dancing girl (costume and all.)

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) thinks that Farscape had it closest to actual non-humanoid diversity, asking:  Does it ever bother you that aliens overwhelmingly look human?

Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: Snikt Snikt Snikt Bub Snikt Edition

I have long been of the opinion that there’s never such thing as too much of a good thing, provided that you’re the target audience.  Even pursuits that are silly, ridiculous or occasionally fatal can be found to have legions of hardcore fans if you look in the right place.  As an old-school comic book fan, I could probably name half a dozen characters who are widely reviled because of endless cameos, crossovers and multiple monthly books.  Characters like Batman, Wolverine, Cable and others are viewed as awful in some circles BECAUSE of their ubiquity, but having recently read the last arc of Rick Remender’s “Uncanny X-Force,” I once again submit that such theories are somewhat suspect.  The book’s cast consisted entirely of characters who bear such accusations, and proceeded to give Deadpool emotional depth, Psylocke gravitas, and made me care when Wolverine’s son was murdered.  If a paint-by-numbers knock-off character like Daken can be as moving as that story made him, then literally ANYONE can be awesome in the right hands.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) is the best there is at what it does, and what it does is emit flatus, asking:  What’s the most enjoyable story featuring characters who are accused of being “overexposed?”

Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: No Pop Culture For Old Men Edition

Recently, some group of ad wizards released their annual list of words and phrases that the general public would like to see stricken from the language, including “fiscal cliff”, “trending” and other overused phraseology.  For my part, I would have chucked in “Whedonverse”, “Wolvie” and “The Dark Knight”, each of which has far outstripped its usefulness in terms of sheer annoyance value.  True, as a card-carried Grumpy Old Man who tries to be highly aware of the language around him, I am susceptible to such petty annoyances and they make me a bit more irritable that the average person.  Still, that ‘Nails-On-A-Chalkboard’ affect isn’t all bad, in that it led to the formulation of today’s query…

The MS- QOTD (pronounced, as always, ” misquoted”, expects to see “Bee Tee Dubs” from one Faithful Spoilerite, asking:  What pop culture words or phrases would you like to see added to the Banned List?

Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: Throw Me The Idol, And I’ll Klaatu Barada Nikto Edition

I clearly remember when ‘Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull’ came out, as the sound of Stephen’s eyes rolling about the alien subplot actually caused small tremors across the entire Midwestern United States.  Thankfully, it’s been nearly five years, which should allow his simmering rage to have subsided enough for me to finally ask a question regarding a certain controversial plot point.  (Also, I only caught the thing on cable recently…)  When I remember the events of the first three films, I recall Mola Ram and his magical potions, an immortal knight, endless vengeful spirits from within the Ark, and… Oh, yes:  THE FREAKIN’ HOLY GRAIL.  It’s clear from these elements that Indy lives in a world that is NOT governed by the same natural laws that you and I follow, nor is Part IV the first time that plot developments in his world require a healthy suspension of disbelief to follow.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) remembered just in time that, in Aramaic, “Nerd-rage” is spelled with a “J”, asking: Given the copious supernatural elements already in play in Indiana Jones’ world, why is the alien subplot in “Crystal Skull” so problematic for some fans?

Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: ‘Don’t Know M’Own Strength’ Edition

While the business of gift-giving is over for a while, it’s still worth ruminating on the subject of the surprise.  Sometimes, the unknown is pleasant and unexpected, other times it’s jury duty on your birthday (not that I’m bitter or anything.)  Whether you believe in resolutions or not, the thought of a new year stretching out before us is an exhilarating and terrifying one all at once, and it makes you wonder what could be around the corner…  Will it be the lady, the tiger, or Honey Boo Boo acting the fool?  Hell if I know, but man, it’s fun to wonder.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) can be cryptic when necessary, just ask Sergeant Boudreaux, asking:  What do you think Major Spoilers has up our collective sleeves in ’13?
