Uncle Scrooge statue popular, sells out in advance

Dark Horse Comics announced the early orders for its Uncle Scrooge statue caused the limited edition collectible to sell out before its August 2009 release date.

Modeled after products that were popular in the 1930s and 1940s, these statuettes have been designed and manufactured to be consistent with earlier Syroco-style figures. These latest pieces, sculpted by Yoe! Studio, join the ever-growing collection of the world’s most famous characters from comic strips, books and, cartoons presented by Dark Horse in this unique style.

I like that this statue and the five others (Donald Duck, Gyro Gearloose, Magica De Spell, Gladstone Gander, and the Beagle Boys, were created to look like they originally appeared in the comic books, and that each has a distressed look to make them look like they were built in the ’30′s and’40′s.

Mimoco is turning its Mimobot flash drives to the dark side with the company’s fourth Star Wars collection.  In this batch, the Sith Lords make an appearance as Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, Captain Rex, and Darth Maul devices.

Completing the cycle later this summer as a San Diego Comic Con exclusive, Mimoco will release a third, limited-edition version of Darth Vader Unmasked. When the helmet is removed, the unmasked visage will be the face of Luke Skywalker, as Luke imagined himself on Dagobah in Star Wars:Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. Only 500 Darth Vader Unmasked Luke Skywalker MIMOBOT drives will be produced and they will only be available at Mimoco’s Comic Con booth #2913 in the STAR WARS Pavilion on July 22 – 26.

SDCC’09: Dark Horse Unveils Domo Exclusive

DOMO_qee.jpg

This year at the San Diego Comic-Con, Dark Horse Comics is giving attendees a chance to snatch up an exclusive Domo “Qee” transparent variant.  The only place to get your hands on the NHK television mascot is to attend the convention (or just wait until it appears on eBay the week after).

The Domo Qee program, to be launched nationwide in August, is Dark Horse’s first try at the popular “blind box” or “mystery box” format. Individual figures are packed in small boxes; the only way to know which particular figure is inside a particular box is to purchase and open the box. In the Domo blind box assortment, figures are sold in counter displays of 15, and each display box of 15 figures is further packed into a master carton of four cases.

In addition, the boxes each contain one component of a “Build-A-Domo” clear transparent figure. When the correct six components are accumulated, the buyer can put together the complete bonus Domo. There will not be a “Build-A-Domo” component in the Comic-Con Exclusive figure.

“We presented a Comic-Con exclusive 5.5” Domo vinyl figure last year,” recalls Dark Horse VP of Product Development, David Scroggy, “and were blown away as all of the limited-edition sold out. This year, with an entirely new toy, we expect an even faster depletion of our Comic-Con stock. Since last year’s was a yellow variant, we chose the same color for the Qee toy.”

The San Diego Comic Con runs July 23-26, and all Four Day passes to the show have sold out (serves you right for waiting).

MOTU Mer-Man Sells Out, International Buyers Locked Out

merman.jpg

The Masters of the Universe re-mastered collection of figures from Mattel have been selling really well since being introduced by the toy company.  Several of those figures have been limited edition figures sold exclusively through Mattel’s MattyCollector.com website (that is until eBay sellers get on the bandwagon).

April 15th saw the release of Mer-Man, and even though Mattel has sold numerous figures through the website, the online shopping cart ended up being fraught with trouble causing many carts to remain empty, and before long international buyers couldn’t get their hands on the MOTU fish man.

The good news is Mattel is addressing the issue, and the better news is there is another chance to get the figures sometime at the end of April.

The official statement from the company after the jump.
