SOLICITATIONS: Lara Croft lands at Dark Horse Comics

Press Release

Crystal Dynamics™, a Square Enix® studio, and Dark Horse Comics, today revealed they have partnered to bring the re-imagined Lara Croft back to print in the world of comics. Look for news on the new series following the release of TOMB RAIDER®, the highly anticipated origin story for Lara Croft®, available March 5, 2013, and will chronicle Lara’s journey after her harrowing adventure in the Dragon’s Triangle.

TRAILER: Lara Croft returns

The first full on trailer for the upcoming Tomb Raider game has arrived.  The animation looks great, and the story works for me, but I know there are a lot of people who are up in arms over Lara’s new look, some of the retconning that is going on and more.

MOVIE: Tomb Raider getting reboot

This is sure to make someone’s day, and ruin it for someone else – the Tomb Raider movie franchise is getting reboot at the hands of Graham King.  With all the rebooting going on with the Tomb Raider game series (and character histories), it was only a matter of time before the effects trickled down to the theater.

GK Films announced Monday that it has acquired the rights from Square Enix Ltd. and the company expects the new Lara Croft film to arrive in theaters in 2013.  What’s really interesting is this is not a new story. We reported on this a little over a year ago when Time Warner was trying to do something with the property.   Looks like they never found a way to bring the gaming franchise turned movie franchise to a new generation of movie goers.

Still, no new Lara has been tapped, which means it’s time for the casting couch H’wood hijinx to begin!

GAMING: New Lara Croft adventure on the way

Crystal Dynamics, the European part of Square Enix, announced a brand spanking new Lara Croft game, and she doesn’t look like the Lara Croft some of us grew up on.

“Forget everything you knew about TOMB RAIDER, we are exploring things that have never been done before in this game,” said Darrell Gallagher, Head of  Studio, Crystal Dynamics. “This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.”

After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was traveling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach.  On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive.

Game Informer magazine has all the information in the January issue that arrives December 11.

RUMOR: Are you looking at the new Lara Croft?

Showbiz Spy is running a story claiming H’wood insiders are talking that Kim Kardashian really wants to play Lara Croft in the next Tomb Raider movie.

“Kim is wanted to play a far more comic-strip version of Lara which would be shot in 3-D and aimed at a teen audience.”

Now that Megan Fox has been kicked to the curb, we’re going to need someone else to feature every other week on Major Spoilers in the form galleries, rumors, and other mindless stories featuring half-clad female celebutard in an attempt to link-bait the unsuspecting 13-year-old to the site.

What do you think dear Spoilerites?  Would you want to see Kardashian as Lara, or is someone in H’wood just wishing up the wrong wet dream?

Art Appreciation Moment of the Day: Adam Hughes

Here’s a little after Christmas holiday cheer to perk up your Saturday courtesy of Adam Hughes.

From a holiday issue of Playstation Magazine; I did this piece maybe… 12 years ago?
Pencil, ink, Adobe Photoshop.
***UPDATE!***
I completely forget that, to get this assignment done (this was one of 11 illustrations), I hired my then-studiomate Jason Martin to ink these!
Apologies to Jason for COMPLETELY forgetting that he inked this!

Lara Croft Back to the Silver Screen

Why haven’t we seen any more Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movies in a while?  The rights reverted back to game creator Eidos a few years ago and apparently there has been a bidding war over which studio would pick up the franchise.  The Hollywood Reporter is noting Time Warner invested more money into the game company, which included the film rights.  Now the studio is trying to put something together for the next generation of movie goers.

The new project, however, is expected to revamp the character and her mission and bear little resemblance to the original pictures. It will reimagine the origins of the character, her love interest and the main villain.

As an open-writing assignment, the project is still in its nascent stages. An actress who could play the role Angelina Jolie made famous would likely come on after a writer and director are attached.

I think Angelina Jolie may not be young enough to reprise her role, so who should take over the mantle of the tomb raider? My money is on Megan Fox, but you can use the comment section below to throw out your wish list of actresses.

Meet the New Lara Croft

01picon.jpg

Every couple of years, EIDOS rolls out a new model to play the role of Lara Croft at trade shows and promotional events that may or may not feature the Tomb Raider.  This time around, it’s up to gymnast Alison Carroll to wield the guns of Croft and to promote the upcoming Tomb Raider: Underworld that arrives in November 2008.

Yes, fanboys, there are more pics of Ms. Carroll after the jump.
