REVIEW: Earth-2 #10

Or – “The Second Wave Is Nearly A Year Old…”

The New 52 launch was, for me, mostly successful.  Though DC editorial clearly chose a few titles/creators to court controversy rather than focus on the product, there was at least a clear line drawn in the sand that said “We’re doing this differently.”  (Even Batman and Green Lantern, though cosmetically unchanged, had some fundamental bits that were drastically adjusted.)  Now, as the New DC works towards its second anniversary, the next big thing has transitioned into the monthly grind of actually delivering titles.  Earth-2 was my favorite of DC’s second wave, but has it maintained its quality?  Your Major Spoilers review awaits!

REVIEW: Justice Society Of America #42

Or – “The Problem With A JLA/JSA Crossover…”

Back in the day, the JLA had their own book, and travelled to Earth-2 (or to somewhere else WITH natives of Earth-2) once a year, usually a two or three part affair.  The JSA seldom had their own title during this period, mind you, and usually we saw a sampling of each team rather than THREE DOZEN heroes.  With the JSA, the JSA All-Stars, and the Justice League in play, as well as guest-stars galore, there’ a lot going on in this crossover, but not a lot of focus…

Review: Justice Society Of America #40

Or – “Time, Time, Time Is On My Side… Yes, It Is!”

Continuing our Major Spoilers Star-Spangled Weekend™!  Y’know, in the 21st century, it’s hard to think of Nazis as a realistic villain.  They’re so far away from their context that someone in a their paraphernalia seems as anachronistic and silly as a pirate or a cowboy or a knight.  Still, for many of the members of the JSA, World War II doesn’t seem all that long ago, and the threads of the National Socialist Party run deep.  Is the future of the Fourth Reich set in stone, or can Mister Terrific’s hail mary pass really save the members of the JSA from their worst loss ever and decades of torture?  I kinda hope so…

The Wall arrives in Smallville

It was only a matter of time before Amanda Waller made her presence known in Smallville, and thanks to some creative thinking at the CW, they’ve cast Pam Grier as the tough as nails agent villain.  Grier will make her debut during the second hour of the Justice Society episode penned by Geoff Johns, when the two-parter airs in January.

While I think Grier will do a cracking good job, one can’t help but wonder what CCH Pounder would bring to the table – oh, right, we’ve already seen her live action Amanda Waller on the SyFy Channel’s Warehouse 13.

Justice Society members announced for Smallville

A couple of casting announcements have been made for the upcoming Justice Society episode of Smallville.  Michael Shanks, of Stargate fame, has been cast as Hawkman, while Brent Stait of Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods will be donning the golden helmet of Doctor Fate.  Smallville has been pretty notorious for changing up the powers/look of classic DC characters for the television series, so I’m not entirely confident we’ll see either of the actors done their respective costumes for the Geoff Johns penned episode.

Review: JSA: Kingdom Come Special – Superman

Can’t let it die, can you?

kcsuperman1picon.jpg

The readership seems to be divided on the return of the Earth-22 Superman.  Some are in favor of the continuing adventures of the Kingdom Come storyline, even though the original follow up series tanked, while others are content with reliving the glory days in Absolute Editions.  With the return of Magog, and E22 Superman, is DC trying to repeat the events from one universe to the other?

Review: Final Crisis – Requiem

Or – “The Green Man Has Gone Away…”

J’onn J’onzz of Ma’aleca’andra, aka John Jones, aka Marco Xavier.  The character who, arguably, really represents the beginning of the Silver Age at DC.  Invisible, super-strong, super-speed, telepathic, intangible, shape-shifting hero with laser vision.  The heart and soul of the Justice League in many of it’s incarnations, a cornerstone of the DC Universe…  The Martian Manhunter is dead.  Long live the Martian Manhunter!
