Review: Red Tornado #1

RedTornado_Cvr1PICON.jpg

When I walked into the comic shop last week and saw Red Tornado #1, I was rather surprised. Here was a character that I always saw in a supporting role and not really as the front and center headline type. He had been a big part of the Justice League of my early youth, was the mentor for Young Justice, and had recently been a pretty important player in some modern Justice League of America storylines.  I remembered reading the issue of Crisis on Infinite Earths where he became an elemental, as well as never being able to find a complete set on his first (and until now, only) mini-series by Kurt Busiek and Carmine Infantino back in 1985. He always seemed to be one of those characters that had enormous potential, but no one was sure what to do with it. I decided that I needed to see what was going on with him, and took the plunge. How was it? Read on to find out.

More Green Lantern rings on the way

Fans at the San Diego Comic-Con were told that more Lantern rings would be on the way, and if Bleeding Cool has the news right, then you might be able to get your hands on all of ‘em if you and your local comic shop are willing to spend some money.

So for every 25 copies of Doom Patrol #4, Booster Gold #26, R.E.B.E.L.S. #10, Outsiders ‘24 and  your retailer orders, they can order a bag of fifty Sinestro rings, Agent Orange rings, Indigo Tribe rings and Star Sapphire rings respectively.

And for every 50 copies of Justice League of America#39, Blackest Night #5 and Adventure Comics #4 sees you with a bag of fifty Red Lantern rings, Green Lantern rings and Blue Lantern rings, also respectively.

Each ring will ship every two weeks, Yellow on November 4th, Orange on November 18th, Red on December 2nd, Green on December 16th, Blue on December 30th (well, December 23rd now, I guess, thanks to Comic Book-Free Day), Indigo on January 13th and Violet on January 27th.

Rich Johnson has a good point about this promotion over the Black Ring event earlier this year in that these issues don’t have high sell rates, which would mean retailers would have to purchase more, just to qualify for the ring order – something they may not be willing to do if the issues don’t sell.

Easy solution?  Buy the book, get the ring. Problem solved.  DC numbers soar through the roof as Green Lantern fans buy books to get the rings, shop owners get more people into the store buying books, so their bottom line rises as well, and the recycling companies get a boost in business, as Green Lantern fans ditch the book they just bought in favor of a piece of non-biodegradeable plastic.

Robinson and Bagley on JLA

Quite frankly, this bit of news slipped through our fingers while we were driving the highways and biways of this great nation over the weekend, so if you’ve already read the news, feel free to move along and read the next exciting bit of news we have here on the site. Or take the time to post your well thought out reactions to the news in the comment section below.

For the rest of you, news out of DC late last week was James Robinson and Mark Bagley have been signed as the new team for Justice League of America.

“It’s a thrill to be given the reins of DC’s flagship team book and to know that my partner in crime(fighting) will be the esteemed Mark Bagley who’s dynamic storytelling skills I intend to make full use of.  It’s further exciting/gratifying for me that I can dove-tail the events of Cry For Justice into the main book where post-Blackest Night will emerge a new team and a new exciting direction as they get caught up in the next wave of events building throughout the DCU.”

The duo start their duties this October.

On the Next Major Spoilers Podcast: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

What film caused Alan Moore to spit vile venom at H’wood, and cause Sean Connery to retire from acting forever?  It’s the “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, of course (hint: it was right there in the title of this post).  While the movie version might be touched on, the Major Spoilers Crew plan on diving into the first volume of the Alan Moore series in the next Major Spoilers Podcast.

From the Wiki!

According to Moore, the initial concept behind the series was initially a “Justice League of Victorian England” but quickly grew into an opportunity to merge all works of fiction into one world. Says Moore: “The planet of the imagination is as old as we are. It has been humanity’s constant companion with all of its fictional locations, like Mount Olympus and the gods, and since we first came down from the trees, basically. It seems very important, otherwise, we wouldn’t have it.”[1] Moore and O’Neill have revealed that they plan to map out many different eras in the League series with Allan Quatermain and Mina Murray being the two constants.
