Press Release Production has commenced on location in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado on Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ epic adventure “The Lone Ranger.” The film reunites the filmmaking team of the first three “Pirates of the Caribbean” blockbusters—producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski—with Johnny Depp, who created Captain Jack Sparrow in his iconic, Academy Award®-nominated performance and contributed the voice of the title character of Verbinski’s Academy Award-winning “Rango.”
When push comes to shove, having someone like Johnny Depp, who brings in billions of dollars in box office money, tends to get the studios to change their minds in regards dropping a proposed movie or giving it the go ahead. Case in point – The Lone Ranger. While it will be very strange to see Depp playing Tonto, Disney has announced it is going ahead with plans to produce the Lone Ranger movie.
Looks like the Armie Hammer/Johnny Depp Lone Ranger movie got shut down this past week because of production cost. It isn’t that Disney’s pockets aren’t deep enough, according to Deadline, it appears that the studios are tired of spending upwards of $300 million plus for every movie, and The Lone Ranger’s estimated $275 million budget may just be the straw that broke the camel’s back. If production costs really are a thing studios are having a gripe over, expect to see other movies suddenly finding their budgets cut in order to meet studio expectations. via Deadline
