REVIEW: Adventures of Superman #1

DC has started a new trend in mainstream comics with their digital first, weekly mini-comics that then get collected into bigger print issues. One of these weekly series is Adventures of Superman, an anthology series that tells a different short story every week by a different creative team. The first three issues of this have been collected for print and are now ready for review. So see how it fairs after the jump!

REVIEW: Dark Avengers #185

New York has been carved up into sections controlled by violent gangs who will stop at nothing to protect their turf. In this chaos, a group of not-quite-heroes in funny outfits find themselves caught in the crossfire. Warring factions as well as shadowy forces behind the scenes conspire to use and/or kill them, while the anti-heroes try to run the gauntlet to return to their home. It makes a good movie, but will it make a good comic?
(Just go watch The Warriors, OK? I’ll wait.)

REVIEW: Dark Avengers #177

Or – “It Used To Be Called ‘Thunderbolts’.”

Apparently, the several-issue arc in New Avengers with Norman Osborn’s latest attempt to clone the Avengers was a huge hit, warranting that it take over this book.

Either that, or Marvel just loves selling us the adventures of people whose assembled archetypes vaguely resemble the Avengers of yore.  Whatever the case, your Major Spoilers review awaits!

REVIEW: Thunderbolts #174

Or – “To Understand A Paradox, One Must First Understand A Paradox…”

A time-traveler always has to be careful not to step on any butterflies or sleep with one’s own forebears, even if she does look like Lea Thompson, but you’d think that a man as smart as The Fixer would know that you can’t kill yourself in your own past…  That’s just basic temporal physics, and it’s about to cost the Thunderbolts big-time.

REVIEW: Thunderbolts #171

Or – “Solo Songbird Story Time!  (Doo Dah!  Doo Dah!)”

The Thunderbolts have been through a lot of changes since their inception during Heroes Return, but Melissa Gold (aka Screaming Mimi, aka Songbird) has been one of my favorite characters in any version of the team, as well as one of the only constants throughout the team’s history.  With the ‘Bolts cascading through the timestream, Songbird has been left behind, and has some time on her sonic-powered hands…

Agents of Atlas chugs on, Exiles put out to pasture

Jeff Parker cleared up a rumor on his website about the status of Agents of Atlas and the Exiles series from Marvel.  For fans of Agents of Atlas will be happy to hear that the series will continue.  However, things aren’t so good for Exiles.

As for EXILES… well, as they say, you can’t save every patient. The best we did was a momentary blip with issue one of the relaunch, and sales went right back to where they were previously. In hindsight, maybe we should have waited a year or two before trying it. It was a blow to me, I was having a great time working with Salva Espin and Casey Jones, and felt I was getting into a good groove with issues that you’ll never see.

Exiles will officially end with issue #6, a double-sized edition.

Parker and Lieber team for Underground

Press Release

As Warner Brothers gears up to release WHITEOUT, its Eisner-winning artist Steve Lieber returns to the adventure genre with a new thriller from Image Comics, pairing with acclaimed AGENTS OF ATLAS and EXILES writer Jeff Parker on the September shipping UNDERGROUND!

“UNDERGROUND is a fast, tough story about people who have been pushed into tight corners — both ethical and literal,” Parker said. “None of them knew they were about to be caught up in a life or death struggle, it’s a situation that has spiraled out of control. I’ve known Steve Lieber for years and he’s the best at this. No one can put the real world on the comics page the way he does. He draws real people and puts them in real danger.”
