On the Next Major Spoilers Podcast: The Fan Film

HH_medium.jpg

This week on the Major Spoilers Podcast, the crew is sitting down to discuss what’s good and bad about the fan film.

Who would swing off a six-story building for a homemade Spider-Man movie? Why would newlyweds spend $20,000 on a Star Wars film from which they can never profit? How did three nobodies blow Steven Spielberg’s mind with an Indiana Jones flick they made as teens in the Eighties?

They’re all part of the Fan Film revolution–an underground movement where backyard filmmakers are breaking the law to create unauthorized movies starring Batman, James Bond, Captain Kirk, Harry Potter and other classic characters. Regular people are making movies that the fans want to see–and which copyrights and common sense would never allow.

To help out with the discussion, the crew is welcoming Dr. Peter Coogan back to the show, as well as author Clive Young, who’s written Homemade Hollywood, a book all about fans behind the camera.

You’ve probably seen films like Batman: Dead End, a Kevin Rubio’s Troops, but what about Grayson, Ryan vs. Dorkman, or the hundreds of other fan flicks floating about on YouTube?  What do you like or hate about fan films?

As always,  the Major Spoilers Podcast is nothing without comments from great readers and listeners like you.  You can use the comment section below, drop us a voice mail by calling (785) 727-1939, or record your comments and send it as an MP3 file in an email to podcast@majorspoilers.com.

We record the new show Tuesday night, so make sure you have your contribution to us by 5:00 PM CST Tuesday evening.

Review: Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods #3

Why Dr. Jones, where have you been?

indianajonesgods3.jpg

I can’t tell you when the last issue of Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods was released, but it was long enough ago for me to look at this issue and say, “Hello there, what do we have here?”

Dark Horse Hires Goldberg as Senior Veep Production

darkhorselogo.jpg

Dark Horse already has a first look deal with Universal, and to help the process along, the company has hired Keith Goldberg as the Senior Vice-President of Production for Dark Horse Entertainment.

Calling Goldberg “the right person at the right time,” Dark Horse president Mike Richardson said: “We’ve seen explosive growth throughout our company, and the film division is no exception. With the addition of an ambitious slate at Universal to our existing film projects, we needed to expand.”

In the deal signed earlier this year, Universal gets access to Dark Horse’s characters and properties, while Dark Horse gets a studio that will distribute its films.  This does not include licensed characters and properties like Star Wars, Aliens, Predator, Indiana Jones, and so on.

Is the Incredible Hulk a Flop?

the_incredible_hulk_trailer.jpg

While browsing the Interwebs this morning I saw a post talking about the low box office performance of the Incredible Hulk.  2008 is certainly the year of comic book movies, and with the initial praise the film received, I had to check out the facts for myself.

Review: The Voyages of She Buccaneer #1

Or – Yo, ‘ho! A Pirates Life for Me

shebuccanearpicon.jpg

When I first saw the solicitation for The Voyages of She Buccaneer, I put it on my list because a) the art looked really good, and b) the art looked really good. When it arrived on my doorstep last week, I really thought this was going to be porn for pre-teens, but after flipping through the book a couple of times, I found a story that could have put Jack Sparrow to shame.

Hulk Smash Box Office

banner.jpg

While it wasn’t Indiana Jones, or even an Iron Man level take at the box office, the Incredible Hulk did walk away with the top movie this past weekend, taking home an estimated $54.5 million domestically.  That’s a lot of green for the big fellow, and has many believing Marvel has gone two for two in its company owned movie franchise.  Even thought the movie is number one, remember, Hulk did not bring in as much as last year’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer ($58 million) or as much as Ang Lee’s take on the Hulk that brought in $62.1 million in its opening weekend.

Still, if the Hulk can keep from dropping 50% or more next weekend, it is well on its way to breaking $100 million domestically next weekend.

Wizard World Philly Report: Skrull Indiana Jones Appears

joneskurllpicon.jpg

Jon, from Double Dumbass On You.com attended Wizard World Philly this past weekend, and ran into any number of Skrulls running around the show floor. If there was this much Skrull cosplay on the show floor this year, I can’t wait until Marvel Apes hits store shelves.

Take the jump for Jon’s complete report and a better look at ol’ green chin.

Because Everyone Loves CG Gophers

DeviantArt is a great place to find works by the talented (and not so talented) artists of the world. Fortunately, “Jolly Jack” falls into the talented category and scores bonus points for the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dig.

From_the_crayons_of_G__Lucas_by_jollyjack.jpg

What is it about George Lucas’ ability to create a character(s) that bring up so much hate per generation? Be it Admiral Ackbar, Jar-Jar Binks, Howard the Duck (admittedly not created by Lucas, but destroyed by him none-the-less), and now CG Gophers, Lucas has done wonders in getting the fanboy community to stop fighting amongst themselves over whether a movie is good or bad and rally around awful characters. One good thing about the vitriol surrounding the CG Gophers is it is deflecting a lot of the hate around CGI Shia LeBeouf swinging from tree to tree with monkeys.
