Major Spoilers Question Of The Day: Throw Me The Idol, And I’ll Klaatu Barada Nikto Edition

I clearly remember when ‘Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull’ came out, as the sound of Stephen’s eyes rolling about the alien subplot actually caused small tremors across the entire Midwestern United States.  Thankfully, it’s been nearly five years, which should allow his simmering rage to have subsided enough for me to finally ask a question regarding a certain controversial plot point.  (Also, I only caught the thing on cable recently…)  When I remember the events of the first three films, I recall Mola Ram and his magical potions, an immortal knight, endless vengeful spirits from within the Ark, and… Oh, yes:  THE FREAKIN’ HOLY GRAIL.  It’s clear from these elements that Indy lives in a world that is NOT governed by the same natural laws that you and I follow, nor is Part IV the first time that plot developments in his world require a healthy suspension of disbelief to follow.

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) remembered just in time that, in Aramaic, “Nerd-rage” is spelled with a “J”, asking: Given the copious supernatural elements already in play in Indiana Jones’ world, why is the alien subplot in “Crystal Skull” so problematic for some fans?

ART APPRECIATION MOMENT OF THE DAY: Patrick Schoenmaker

I’ve spoken at length about my love for all things Indiana Jones.  Sitting in that movie theater back in 1981 is what triggered my desire to seek a film degree.  Though I would love to see more adventures of my favorite archeologists with a whip, Harrison Ford is just aging way too fast for any more films to surface.  Which is why I love what Patrick Schoenmaker is doing with his workup of the character in cartoon form.

MOVIES: Raiders of the Lost Ark headed to IMAX

There were two times in my life I got to see Raiders of the Lost Ark on the big screen; the first was when it was originally released in a smallish theater in Ottawa, KS.  The second time was in Atlanta, GA some 15 years later at the magnificent Fox Pavilion.  Both times were magical, and seeing the adventures of one of my favorite characters in what has to be one of my all time favorite movies is always a thrill. So you can imagine how excited I am to hear that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are bring Raiders of the Lost Ark to IMAX for a one week run beginning September 7, 2012.

TOP TEN: Sequels That Hold Their Own

At times there seems to be a stigma attached to movie sequels. A lot of the time they have no purpose other than to capitalize on the name recognition of their popular predecessor. But there are times where the sequels live up to what has come before, or even surpass it on some occasions. Take the jump and see which movies made the cut, and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo sadly didn’t.

Indiana Jones V rumor is just that

After the fan backlash to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, one would think Speilberg and Lucas would be hesitant to jump back on the Indiana Jones franchise so soon.  According to the New Zealand website, Stuff, the fifth Indiana Jones movie would feature Dr. Jones headed to the Bermuda Triangle, presumably to investigate the supernatural mysteries there.

For now, the rumor has proved to be false, according to Frank Marshall, and his Twitter feed.

The rumor about INDY 5 is completely false. Nothing has changed, we are not shooting next year and still in the research phase…

On the flip side, Marshall did confirm that a fifth movie was in the works, or at least in pre-pre-production.

You’re the EIC: Dark Horse Comics

darkhorselogo.jpg

All the discussion involving Marvel and DC has been really good, but this week we’re stepping away from the big two and beginning our look at the other publishers in the industry.  I remember when Dark Horse Comics came out of nowhere and presented the comic reading world with the likes of Indiana Jones, Concrete, Aliens, Predator, Terminator, and of course Hellboy and Sin City.   As the years went on, Dark Horse was able to get the property rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Star Wars to give readers something other than super hero action.

One would think the property comics would be big sellers (and for Buffy the Vampire Slayer it is), but sales never elevated Dark Horse to the same level as Marvel and DC.  It seems comic book readers are always quick to point out the faults of a company, but rarely offer how they would solve the problem.

Here’s your chance to fix the company.

So here’s your chance to fix the industry, and here’s how it works:

  • The previous Editor in Chief has been fired, and the publisher is looking to hire a replacement.
  • In the comment section below, outline your ideas on what you would do to close the gap between Dark Horse Comics and the big two.
  • In your comments you need to not only state the change, but why you believe the change would be for the greater good of the company.  For example, if your idea is to capture the young reader market (kids between 8 and 12 years old), how are you going to do it?  What needs to change?
  • Convince everyone that your ideas are the best direction for the company, by selling your idea.  Get us excited, get us fired up, and best of all make sure it is for the good of the company and the industry as a whole.

This week it is all about Dark Horse Comics, and you’re the Editor-in-Chief.

Keep the discussion on topic, and keep it civil.

Efron is Jonny Quest, but not IN a Movie Called Jonny Quest

zac_efron.jpg

Rumors were bandied about last week that tweener heart-throb Zac Efron had landed the role as Jonny Quest.  The rumor looks like it is face in reports showing up on the L.A. Times Hero Complex blog.  The odd part is, it looks like Warner Bros. might drop the name Jonny Quest from the title of the film, for fearing it will be likend to Speed Racer.

Here’s a tip H’Wood – it isn’t the name that put the negative conoation on the Speed Racer film, it was the lavish over the top stylized crapfest of a story the Wachowski brothers whipped out and expected audiences to flock to because of their Matrix creditials.  Do I want to see a 21-year-old Efron playing an older 11 year old avdenturer? Well, at least he isn’t Shia LaDoof, but unless the studio can cobble together an awesome story set during the 1960s and play this up as a true adventure movie and not an Indiana Jones wanna be, then don’t expect me to line up.

Here’s the worst case scenario – girls won’t go see Efron in a Jonny Quest movie because they don’t know who Jonny Quest is, and it doesn’t feature Vanessa Hudgens in a love story, leaving only the boys who want to see Zac.  To make it worse, I could see the H’Wood Brain Trust deciding to go the Wachowski route and do the who thing against a green screen.
