House of Ideas
It’s probably no secret by now that both ComiXology and Marvel have begun their own “unlimited” digital comics services, each adding new books on a regular basis. Granted, ComiXology has comics from several companies, and it’s no surprise to anyone that the House of Ideas offers their own products. They are, however, working together on some levels. I’m conflicted when it comes to these services. Let me tell you why.
What else is there to talk about in the industry besides Disney’s recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox’s TV and Movie divisions, paving the way for the Marvel characters licensed there to return home to Marvel Entertainment?
It’s been a weird week or two at the House of Ideas. Last week, Brian Michael Bendis signed an exclusive contract with DC. In the last few days, Axel Alonso quietly left the company, with C.B. Cebulski being named Editor-In-Chief.
It almost seems like all this came to light eons ago, but I thought I should weigh in on the recent news that Brian Michael Bendis has signed an exclusive contract with DC, leaving Marvel behind for now. I’ve been watching the reaction from fans and fellow creators alike, and it’s been really intriguing! Let me share my thoughts on all this before we leave this topic behind!
I’m always intrigued by just what niche each comics publisher works to carve out for itself. Marvel and DC own superheroes, Image has an “image” of being an alternative publisher, and others move to make their own mark in the industry. Over the past several years, IDW Publishing has been developing relationships with other companies, and they’ve been really successful at it. This week, they announced a new partnership, and it’s with a company I particularly admire.
As posted in a news release here at MajorSpoilers.com, Marvel has revised their policy regarding redeeming digital codes.
On Friday, MajorSpoilers.com’s Head Honcho Stephen Schleicher wrote the following: “Diamond Comic Distributors has announced DC Comics took the top spot once again in September for comics released in the direct market. Is this the sign of a major market change, or is the apocalypse upon us all!?” Given the reaction of some of my Marvel friends, I’d say the latter. I’ve had to give some the local comics suicide hotline number! Sheesh!
This Wednesday will be the beginning of the newest DC Comics event – Rebirth! DC Universe: Rebirth #1 will be available in two days! Eighty pages for just $2.99! Of course, DC hopes they’ll get a response closer to The New 52 than DCYou, but we’ll see. Rebirth is getting quite a lot of attention already, and some stores are doing special things to highlight this DC event.
I’ve been reading comics now for decades, and one of the trends I thought would last forever was the popularity of comics featuring mutants. However, even I’m surprised at how quickly the mutants have faded away in the last couple of years. Here’s what I think happened!
I have to say, right off the bat, that I have NOT seen the recent Fantastic Four movie. I usually don’t let reviewers control my perception of a film, but this time the chorus was so unanimous that I figured it was better to wait until the film hit the Netflix-type venue.
