Next week sees the arrival of Archie Comics #600 featuring the wedding of Archie and Veronica.  It’s a future story, and there is a really nice out for readers who would rather see Archie not go down that road.  Archie Comics has sent Major Spoilers a sneak peek of Archie #600 and Pals-n-Gals Double Digest #134.

Boom! Studios and Harper Collins sign distribution agreement

Boomstudios_1.jpg

Those guys and gals over at Boom! Studios are a pretty smart bunch. If you follow all the news they put out (nearly all of it here on the Major Spoilers site), you’ll notice an interesting trend, and can connect the dots to what is happening next in the company and the industry as a whole. The Disney/Boom! Kids deal didn’t come as a shock, and with the latest news that Boom! has signed an agreement with Harper Collins Canada, shifting trends with the distribution market could be hidden in the company press release.

We are extremely excited about this alliance with HarperCollinsCanada,” BOOM! Studios CEO Ross Richie said, “The team at the company is an exciting, powerful group that will take BOOM! to the next level, building on our Direct Market and newsstand presence and allowing us to focus on the Canadian market in a smart, targeted way with some of the biggest and best brands in the world, such as our Pixar and Muppets comic books, as well as Farscape, Philip K. Dick’s science fiction classic Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and upcoming blockbusters like Die Hard.”

The best part is, there are going to be more Boom! Studios titles hitting Canada, which is good news to our friends to the north.

SDCC’09: You can be in an Archie Comic

Those attending the San Diego Comic-Con next week can enter for a chance to be drawn in an upcoming issue of Archie Comics.

Archie Comics will be giving away a Grand Prize at the San Diego Comic Con with one lucky winner appearing in a future Archie Comic, drawn by a famous Archie comic book artist! Names will be collected during the “Archie Comics: Archie Marries Veronica Panel” on Thursday July 23rd, 11:30-12:30 in Room 4. New Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater will pick the winner at the end of the panel. That person will be photographed to have their likeness included in a story where they get to meet Archie and his pals ‘n’ gals!

Considering this panel takes place at the same time as the Disney 3D, Middleman, and World of Warcraft panels, there’s probably a pretty good chance of winning.  I wonder if Julian will try to win, wearing a Major Spoilers T-shirt?

MySpace Cup o’ Joe Comes to a Close

MyCup17_Wolverine.jpg

Well this is an interesting turn of events.  The weekly conversation with Marvel Editor in Chief Joe Quesada is ending over at Myspace’s Comic Books.

Yeah. This will be our last week here. We didn’t really give any advance warning, ’cause we wanted to go out business-as-usual, and hopefully with a bang as well. The big thing is, right now my schedule is just in…sane with work, and I find myself not being able to find the time and devote myself to this column as I’d like to…

We’ve had a lot of fill-ins that have been great, but it’s more than I’d like in a column we call MyCup o’ “Joe.” Someday I’d like to come back to this—hopefully sooner rather than later—but I’d like to come back to it in a way that I can really devote the proper time to it. So really, I need to thank all the editors and creators that helped and filled in. They were great. And the editors have really, really helped me with the fan questions. I’m still hands-on with all the macro-, more global planning of the Marvel U, but not so much in the fine detail. I usually don’t know specifically what villain will be appearing in issue #87 of a title, so they’ve helped me fill in all the blanks. Kudos to the guys and gals, they’re the best team of editors in the world and I’ll kick anybodies ass who says otherwise.

MySpace Comic Books promises to continue the Marvel coverage with exclusive Marvel Previews during the all-new Marvel Fridays!  That can mean one of two things; 1) MySpace Comic Books will actually have exclusive previews, or 2) the rest of us will have our Marvel previews taken away as Marvel gravitates toward alienating all the other comic websites out there.  Let’s just hope the Marvel goes with #1.

Bowlers Get Archie Treatment

pngdd131.jpg

Archie Comics has announced real life bowling champs Chris and Lynda Barnes are getting the comic book treatment and placed in an upcoming isue of Pals-n-Gals Double Digest #131.

“7-10 Slip”: When Pop Tate breaks his arm in a fall, the kids rally together to raise money for his medical bills.  They get some help from real-life bowling champions Chris and Lynda Barnes.  This husband-and-wife team is noted for winning the most prestigious titles in bowling: Chris is the PBA player of the year and Lynda the 2008 USBC Queens champion.  Now they’ll “bowl” you over Archie Comics style, in the most “striking” story yet!

The Stephen Oswald story arrives May 6, 2009 at comic book stores, while the newstands and other outlets will receive the book May 19, 2009.  Pals-n-Gals #131 has a cover price of $3.99 (176 pages).

A Big Thanks

tipjartop.jpg

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has placed a donation in the Major Spoilers Tip Jar.  As much as everyone at Major Spoilers loves sharing our knowledge and joy of comics and pop culture with like minded folk around the world, it doesn’t come without expenses (quite a large number of expenses).

While Luthor Dollars are great (see the Major Spoilers Dictionary), having real money to put to our growing expenses is nice.

I don’t want this post to come off as a “we’re bums and we’re begging for donations” entry, as tips are always appreciated, but never required, but I did want to take a moment and say thank you to everyone who dropped off a donation in the last couple of weeks.

Thanks Guys and Gals! YOU ROCK!
