On the Next Major Spoilers Podcast: ElfQuest – Fire and Flight

This week, on the Major Spoilers Podcast, your hosts examine ElfQuest by Wendy and Richard Pini.

elfquestcoverElfquest (or ElfQuest) is a cult hit comic book property created by Wendy and Richard Pini in 1978. It is a fantasy story about a community of elves and other fictional species who struggle to survive and coexist on a primitive Earth-like planet with two moons. Several published volumes of prose fiction also share the same setting. Over the years Elfquest has been self-published by the Pinis, then Marvel Comics,[1] then the Pinis again through their own company Warp Graphics and more recently DC Comics. All issues of Elfquest are available online for free.

That’s right, you can read the series, right now FOR FREE!

FAN FILM: ElfQuest – A Fan Imagining

Here’s the full look at the fan made, Pini supported, $5,000 budgeted ElfQuest fan film that made its online premiere yesterday.

While this visually is very nice, and fan films are certainly a way to keep characters and properties alive, I kind of wish producers/actors Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes would have developed more of a story in this piece instead of trying to cram as many characters as they could into the extended trailer. But still a great job.

Now, if this fan film can get more people to check out the source material and more importantly BUY the source material, the money spent will be effective.

Elfquest: The Movie

elfquest.jpgWendy and Richard Pini have teamed up with Warner Bros. to bring their long running indie comic Elfquest to the silver screen.  The film will be written by Rawson Thurber, who will also direct and produce.

The original comic, which the Pinis initially self-published starting in 1978, followed a tribe of elves known as the Wolfriders in their attempts to survive and link with other dispersed elves on an Earth-like planet with two moons while on the lookout for tribes of humans and trolls, both of which acted as allies and enemies.

There have been multiple attampts to make the series a movie in the past and all have fallen through.  Interestingly, no format has been determined yet, meaning this could be live action, 3D CG, or 2D animated.
