ART APPRECIATION MOMENT OF THE DAY: Adam Hughes

Adam Hughes art is extremely expensive for the average comic book art fan.  His early sketches are even more rare and hard to come buy, which is why the current eBay auction featuring his sketch of Jenny Mays of The Maze Agency series makes us take notice.

Win I win the lottery: DeLorean Time Machine replica

If I only had a spare $60,000 lying around the Major Spoilers mansion, I’d head over to eBay and pick up my very own time machine – built out of a DeLorean.

Superheroes for Hospice

Press Release

Superheroes For Hospice is hosting their 2nd Comic Book Show on Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Saint Barnabas Health Care System Corporate Building, located at 95 Old Short Hills Road, West Orange.   All proceeds will support the patients and families of the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center (SBHPCC).

This project started in December 2008 by Volunteer Coordinator, Spiro Ballas.  “I’m reliving my youth for a good cause,” says Ballas. SBHPCC relies heavily on donations and fundraising projects to bridge the gap between the cost of care and the insufficient reimbursement received from insurance companies.

Cosplay 101: Getting Started

I’m often asked how I got into the hobby of cosplay and surprisingly enough my answer is simple; I saw something that I wanted to try, loved it and have been cosplaying now for the past three years. The first exposure I had to the wonderful world of cosplay were photos of a beautiful Japanese woman dressed as Rikku from the video game Final Fantasy X. I was intrigued that someone put so much time and detail into the outfit. She truly looked like Rikku come to life which instantly captured my imagination. How much fun it must be, I wondered to portray a character you love. Unlike Halloween, which only allows you to dress up once a year, cosplay gives you the opportunity to wear a costume for conventions and photo shoots.

One Ring to Rule Them All… and in the Blackest Night Bind Them

Here’s a look at Hal Jordan sporting the costumes and rings of the other Lantern Corps.  The action figures were exclusive only to the San Diego Comic Con, and attendees could only buy two per day, which means they’re up on eBay now, with very high asking prices.  Right now, one complete autographed set is going for $450.

Thanks to Gilbert for the tip!

Ecto-1 doesn’t sell, needs more money

Those who troll around eBay are sure to find some spectacular pop culture items if one looks long enough, and has deep enough pockets.  While a working replica of Tom Servo may only set you back a couple hundred bucks, you’re going to need a lot more than $45,000 to pick up the original car used in the Ghostbusters movie.

There is not a lot that can be said about this car once you see it you know what it is. This car was owned by Universal Studios as you can see by the copy of the title. This is the real Universal car not a copy. The car runs and drives good it has new tires on it know. The car is in a car Museum right now, when it goes on tour it draws a VERY VERY LARGE crowd.

Surely in this economy, people have to be beating down the door for this car.  If you want to attract a crowd at your next convention (and make some money on the side) this may not be a bad deal.  The auction has unfortunately ended, but there is a phone number to call the seller.  Perhaps you can work out a deal.

Matty Collector unveils DCUC Wave 9 packaging

I’m pretty sure we’ve run the images from Mattel’s DC Universe Collection wave 9 before, but we’re running them again, simply because I find the Chemo collect and connect figure so fascinating.  I’ve had a devil of a time with the entire collect and connect series, as I don’t think I’ve been able to complete a single figure – THANKS TARGET!

I’m going to have to go eBay diving over the next couple of weeks to find all the back issue figures and parts, because I have completionism OCD, and also because these are pretty awesome figures.

Take the jump for the full gallery!

SDCC’09: Dark Horse Unveils Domo Exclusive

DOMO_qee.jpg

This year at the San Diego Comic-Con, Dark Horse Comics is giving attendees a chance to snatch up an exclusive Domo “Qee” transparent variant.  The only place to get your hands on the NHK television mascot is to attend the convention (or just wait until it appears on eBay the week after).

The Domo Qee program, to be launched nationwide in August, is Dark Horse’s first try at the popular “blind box” or “mystery box” format. Individual figures are packed in small boxes; the only way to know which particular figure is inside a particular box is to purchase and open the box. In the Domo blind box assortment, figures are sold in counter displays of 15, and each display box of 15 figures is further packed into a master carton of four cases.

In addition, the boxes each contain one component of a “Build-A-Domo” clear transparent figure. When the correct six components are accumulated, the buyer can put together the complete bonus Domo. There will not be a “Build-A-Domo” component in the Comic-Con Exclusive figure.

“We presented a Comic-Con exclusive 5.5” Domo vinyl figure last year,” recalls Dark Horse VP of Product Development, David Scroggy, “and were blown away as all of the limited-edition sold out. This year, with an entirely new toy, we expect an even faster depletion of our Comic-Con stock. Since last year’s was a yellow variant, we chose the same color for the Qee toy.”

The San Diego Comic Con runs July 23-26, and all Four Day passes to the show have sold out (serves you right for waiting).
