artArt Appreciation Moment of the Day

Conan makes an appearance in the Art Appreciation Moment of the Day, with a piece by Carlo Pagulayan.  I’m digging the fine detail of this drawing that he used as a tryout for the redesign of the current Dark Horse Comics Conan series.

Marvel is bringing legendary comic creator Stan Lee to the San Diego Comic-Con and giving fans a chance to meet The Man. Starting at 9am on July 24th, come by the Marvel Booth (#2429) to receive a ticket (no purchase necessary) for a random drawing to meet Stan Lee. Shortly thereafter, Marvel will conduct the drawing and if you’re one of the lucky fans whose ticket is randomly pulled, you will receive a special pass to meet Stan Lee and have one item signed during his appearance at the booth from 1:30-2:00, later that day. Check out Michael Cho’s Iron Man piece.  Wowza! Here’s a quick drawing of Iron Man I finished a few nights ago. I drew it up in ink markers, but scanned it into photoshop and added a bit of paper texture. As some of you might know, I doodle Iron Man quite a bit, though not as much lately. But I felt like drawing him again, so took an old sketch from my sketchbook and inked it up to share on this blog. And by this blog, he means his own Michael Cho’s Sketchbook site.

Yes, there are a great number of entries that feature attractive women in these Art Appreciation Moments of the Day, and while it is nice to gaze upon the female form, it is more interesting to see how female artists portray the form.  Here’s a fun Catwoman piece by Jessica Hickman, for the Batman Archives Sketch Cards Series. My drawing on one of Mark McHaley’s Batman Archives sketch cards. He then colored it as only he can.  I love how he lays down the paint and can get such detail with simple brushstokes. via Deviant Art

I’ve been away from the DeviantArt scene for a while, so I’ve been failing ot check in with what Detective Comics artist Dustin Nguyen was up to.  Here are two spectacular pieces he’s completed recently; one for an upcoming Detective Comics cover, and another simply titled Red Carpet. Yeah, you’ll want to take the jump and click on the full sized image.

Kevin Church over at www.beaucoupkevin.com has posted an interesting article by John DiBello about sexual harassment at the San Diego Comic Con, and what isn’t being done about it.  Kevin wants everyone to spread the word and talk about it on their own sites, so we’re posting it here. Overheard at San Diego Comic-Con while I was having lunch on the balcony of the Convention Center on Sunday July 27: a bunch of guys looking at the digital photos on the camera of another, while he narrated: “These were the Ghostbusters girls. That one, I grabbed her ass, ’cause I

Here’s an all ages title coming your way this holiday season from Image Comics’ Silverline imprint.  Bruce: The Little Blue Spruce is by Kristen Koerner and Jim Valentino that tells the story of a little tree that is looking for a home.  It’s the feel good book for the holidays! “One of my unattained career goals was to do a children’s book and when Kris brought BRUCE: THE LITTLE BLUE SPRUCE to me, I instantly knew this would be it,” said Valentino. “Not only did I love the gentle message of accepting the differences in ourselves and others but the

For those of you who are interested in the Nerdtacular II event hosted by Scott Johnson at MyExtraLife (and sponsored by your very own Major Spoilers), you might be interested to know there are going to be some great prizes at the event. The biggest so far is a Nintendo Wii. A lucky Nerdtacular attendee will receive one of these bad boys in a drawing before the movie. How cool is that? Too cool, that’s how cool. I wish I could give the donator more props but he want’s to remain anonymous. Cool indeed. Keep a sharp eye out for
