DIGITAL COMICS: Dark Horse preps digital comics app

Dark Horse Comics is putting the final touches on their iPad App, and we should get more information as 4/20 approaches. While Dark Horse didn’t go into detail as to why the app was delayed before, Apple’s enforcement of in-app sales probably had something to do with it.

DIGITAL COMICS: Flashpoint will not be Day-and-Date

Sad news for comic fans hoping to enjoy the DC Comics Day-and-Date release of Flashpoint on their iPad or portable device – It ain’t gonna happen. According to The Source, DC’s official blog and company news feed, Flashpoint, and all the related tie-in issues, including issues of Booster Gold that tie to the series, will be released four weeks after the print issues arrive in stores.

So, for example, the print edition of FLASHPOINT #1 comes out in print on May 11, and will be released digitally on June 10.

Generation Lost is the current series DC releases in digital format the same day it arrives in print, and it makes getting my new comic book fix easy on days when my regular comic shipment doesn’t arrive in my mailbox.

In a recent Major Spoilers Poll of the Week, we asked when Spoilerites bought their new comics, and the current trend shows most people wait a couple of weeks (roughly a month) to pick up the most recent releases. I guess DC is listening and applying this to their digital initiative, because instant access is so much more difficult and a hassle, compared to driving 30 minutes to a comic book shop in hopes your issues haven’t sold out.

It’s a brilliant move – simply brilliant, as it ensures digital comic readers, who don’t have access to comic book shops, or mail order distributor, will still be interested a month later when reviews and commentary about the series are already floating around the Intardwebz.

OPINION: Why I Prefer Print Over Digital Comics

Or – “That Univac Thing Is Just A Passing Fad, I Tellya!”

It has become a running gag on the Major Spoilers podcast that “Stephen has an iPad!” and thus loves the futuristic glow of his digital comics, while Matthew is a neo-luddite stuck haunting the back issue bins of musty-smelling dollar stores in search of a vintage first appearance of Betty Cooper.  Some have accused me of being a rigid old man, afraid of change and while there may be some validity to that claim, I firmly believe that while digital versions certainly aren’t going away, they will NEVER supersede the paper-and-ink comic book experience…
