DIGITAL COMICS: Dark Horse initiative stalls

Dark Horse Comics made quite the buzz last year when they announced they would sell digital comics cheaper than the competition, by keeping everything in house, and creating individual apps for their titles.  Conan, Sin City, and a few others were launched, but since October, things have been pretty quiet.  Turns out things aren’t going as planned according to a recent post on the Dark Horse blog.

This past October at New York Comic Con, Dark Horse announced that we would be developing our own platform for digital comics distribution. We stated we would launch this exciting new initiative in January. However, factors beyond our control have impacted our plans and we are working to address these new developments. We remain committed to deliver on our promise to provide fans with the highest quality experience at a great price; consistent with the standards we have established over the last 25 years.

There have been a lot of announcements recently regarding applications that allow independent publishers to create and sell their own digital comics through ComiXology, Aqualab, and others, so if Dark Horse is having software issues, they might want to look into these. Of course if they simply need someone to do the conversion for them on the cheap, I’m sure there are a ton of comic fans who wouldn’t mind helping out for a modest price.
