Boom! Studios and Haven Distributors sign agreement

Boom! Studios announced yesterday that it has signed a distribution agreement with Haven Distributors.  The deal has Haven distributing all second printings of the monthly comics to the direct market.

“Retailers have been begging us to get our second prints into their stores at a faster pace for the past year,” said BOOM! Studios CEO Ross Richie. “We’re happy to be able to offer retailers another choice in getting an important part of our product line to their stores and into the hands of their customers.”

It’s interesting this announcement has been made, especially in light of the troubles going on at Diamond with continued cutbacks and staff layoffs.  Before you jump to conclusions about the major distributor collapsing, keep in mind Boom! does have distribution deals with Simon and Schuster, and Harper Collins Canada, and Kable Distribution Services.  Boom! has done a great deal to market itself, and ensuring comics get into the hands of potential readers faster is a good sign.

Guillermo del Toro to produce Deadman flick

Deadman has always been one of those characters that could be incredibly fantastic or tediously boring.  I don’t think DC has found the perfect balance yet (although Wednesday Comics is doing a bang up job).  Perhaps with the news that Guillermo del Toro is producing a Deadman movie will bring spark to the character and cause a positive reaction from fans and the rest of the world, who know nothing about the character.

Hey, Kids! Meth…and Comics!

If you are going to start peddling drugs in your local neighborhood, or even in a large metro region like, say Denver, Colorado, then you might want to take a tip from the recently busted Castro brothers, who figured out a way to hide large sums of money.

The alleged meth king-pins were laundering their ill-gotten gains by buying and selling classic comic books. According to reports as many as 100 boxes of comic books were encased in plastic during the drug bust.

Theoretically, the plan by the alleged drug dealers was a good one.  While the DEA and other law enforcement officials might be tracking gambling, prostitution, and small arms rings, no one would expect the Spanish Inquisition the local comic shop.  With demand for rare comics quite high, a quick cash exchange for the books would get someone a bunch of unmarked and clean bills pretty quickly.

We’re not condoning using drugs kids, but I do have to give it to these two for figuring out a different way to launder their gains.

Spider-Woman a hit on iTunes

For fans of Critical Hit, the Major Spoilers Dungeons and Dragons podcast, you’ll be happy to know it went live on iTunes this week, and you can now subscribe to the show, here.  Why didn’t it show up on the front page of the iTunes Podcast Directory?  It might be because there weren’t that many people that subscribed on the first day, and I blame Spider-Woman for that.

The Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev series hit iTunes in a big way, taking the number one spot on the Top Television-Animation sales chart.

“To wake up this morning and see Spider-Woman ranked so high on the iTunes charts is crazy insane to me,” gushed Brian Michael Bendis. “Thanks to all the readers, and especially the motion comics first timers, who tried us out and than hit the subscribe button. To quote the Stan: you ain’t seen nothing yet!”

That’s great news for Spider-Woman fans, but I’m sure more than a few RPG’ers are shedding a tear right now.
