Criminal returns

Marvel has announced that Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are teaming once again to bring Criminal back to comic book pages.

Tracy Lawless, the most popular character in the series history, takes center stage in Criminal: The Sinners #1 as made men turn up dead all over the city! But when criminals need justice, Tracy’s their best—and only—hope! But just who’s behind these mob-style hits on made men?

“Doing INCOGNITO was just the break that Sean and I needed to recharge our crime batteries.  Now we’re back with more grimy goodness, and hopefully all the new readers we picked up with INCOGNITO will follow us back to CRIMINAL,” Brubaker said in a prepared press release.  “And as always with CRIMINAL, this new story stands on its own, and is totally new-reader-friendly.

Criminal: The Sinners #1 arrives September 30, 2009, and has a $3.50 cover price.

Review: The Torch #1

110_TORCH_1PICON.jpg

It’s extremely interesting that the first thing the readers see when they pick this book up is a wonderfully rendered representation of the original Human Torch depicted in a striking crucifixion pose. This charter character, who in every sense is the “guiding light” of the Marvel universe, was the solid foundation for everything that came afterwards. There could be no Johnny Storm if Jim Hammond hadn’t been created by the scientist from Brooklyn. Professor Horton lit a beacon that is still shining strongly seventy years later.

Review: 28 Days Later #1

28DaysLater_01PICON.jpg

After enduring all the dreadful events that occurred to her after the release of the Rage virus, we now find Selena somewhat safely ensconced in a Norwegian refugee camp. One might think that the absolute last thing she would consider would be a return trip to the British mainland but a conversation with a with a crusading journalist convinces her to do exactly that. The other members of the expeditionary force seem to regard her as more of a hindrance than an important part of the team but she soon shows her truth worth when they all come brutally face to face with some of the Infected humans.

McFarlane writing new Spawn movie

Fans of the first Spawn movie, or the original comic book, or just a fan of Todd McFarlane, will get a kick out of the news that McFarlane has started worked on the screenplay for a new Spawn movie.

“The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years,” McFarlane said. “The movie idea is neither a recap or continuation. It is a standalone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary.”

According to SuperHero Hype, the McFarlane is targeting older audiences for this film.

Jason Patric joins cast of Losers

The Losers have found their villain in the form of Jason Patric.

Patric plays Max, a CIA agent who has gone off the rails and sets up the title characters, a black ops team, to be killed.

This is Patric’s first comic book role, and first time as the heavy in a movie.  The movie is currently shooting in Puerto Rico.

Kate Beckinsale keeps you frosty

I’m a big movie poster fan.  The way a studio uses the medium to get the audiences attention is far and above any other form of advertising, including comic book covers.  Take the jump to see the full promo poster for Warner Bros. upcoming movie, Whiteout.

Walking Dead shuffling to AMC

AMC has been doing some big things in the cable realm over the last couple of years.  The Mad Men series took off like wildfire, and now it looks like AMC is looking to adapt Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead for the small screen as well.

Frank Darabont is on board to write, direct and exec produce the project, with Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Pictures and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion also executive producing.

I’m glad a cable network picked up the rights to this property instead of a movie studio, which really couldn’t do justice to the comic book in a single movie.  While Darabont is a fine writer, it would be even better if Kirkman were on board to help write the screenplay.
