Interview: Cosplaying Heroes and Villains

At the recent Wizard World Philadelphia convention (which took place this past June) there was a particular cosplayer getting an enormous amount of attention and upon laying eyes on him, it was easy to see why. With his tailored purple suit, white makeup and sly grin it looked as if The Joker had sprung to life from Batman: The Animated Series. It’s easy to say that he was a big hit among those attending the con to the point that people were lining up and taking turns to be photographed with him.

Fast forward three months later and I stumbled upon the cosplayers online profile. His name is Paul and I discovered that he has a very impressive collection of costumes. After witnessing his impact on the convention crowd and being highly interested in him myself, I took this opportunity to interview him for Major Spoilers about the hobby of cosplay.

SDCC’09: Snyder to give live Watchmen commentary at con and BD Live

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group will give fans the ultimate inside track on two landmark releases at Comic-Con International on Saturday, July 25 with a Live Community Screening of Watchmen: Director’s Cut via BD-Live, and a first-look panel for the breakout Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment game, Batman: Arkham Asylum.

The event begins at 8:30 p.m. in Room 6BCF of the San Diego Convention Center.

Meet Paul Dini

Calling the Spoiler Legion!   If you are in Los Angeles this Friday (December 19, 2008), head down to Meltdown Comics and meet Paul Dini.  The man behind Batman: The Animated Series, and more recently Detective Comics,  will be signing Top Cow’s Jungle Belle: Santa Claus Vs. Frankenstein, and copies of Madame Mirage trades.

Dini will be on hand from 7:00 – 10:00 PM at Meltdown Comics, 7522 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles CA for a Q&A with fans.  Cookies and eggnog will be provided for attendees.  WOOT!

Take your Major Spoilers mini-poster with you, get a picture with you and Dini holding the sign, and we might just have prizes for the first five people who send us their pictures with the famous scribe.

Interview: Andrea Romano

Andrea Romano, arguably the best known casting/dialogue director on the animation scene today, brings the voices of yet another DC Universe animated original film to life with “Wonder Woman.” Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation are set to release the all-new film on March 3, 2009, as distributed by Warner Home Video. The action-packed movie will also be available OnDemand and Pay-Per-View as well as available for download day and date, March 3, 2009.

“Wonder Woman” is the fourth DC Universe film in the ongoing series, and Romano has returned – after the first three successful ventures – to cast and direct the likes of Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Alfred Molina, Virginia Madsen, Oliver Platt and Rosario Dawson. In an industry that once treated voiceovers with the anonymity of the witness protection plan, Romano has become a household name to legions of animation fans. Just name a show – “Animaniacs” or “Smurfs,” “Batman: The Animated Series” and any of Warner Bros. Animation’s super hero series – and fans shout “Andrea Romano” in their beloved credits roll call in harmony with names like “Bruce Timm” and “Alan Burnett.”

Interview: Kevin Conroy is Batman

Kevin Conroy had studied for and starred on the stage, advanced his career through soap operas, and was featured in television series like “Dynasty” and “Tour of Duty.” He had no idea that stepping into a sound booth in 1991 to audition for his first cartoon voiceover role would forever cement his place in the annals of animation and help to extend the Batman legacy to untold legions of fans.

Conroy quickly became the Batman voice by which all others are judged – and rarely assessed as an equal. He has cast a loud shadow in voicing the Dark Knight and Bruce Wayne for 17 years, beginning with “Batman: The Animated Series” and continuing through 16 films, video games and animated series (covering more than 220 episodes). He reprises the role in triumphant fashion in “Batman Gotham Knight,” the highly-anticipated third film in the ongoing series of DC Universe animated original PG-13 movies.

“Batman Gotham Knight” will arrive July 8, 2008 on DVD and Blu-Ray disc, and will also be available that day On Demand via digital cable and for download through broadband sites. The film is produced as a collaboration between DC Comics, Warner Premiere, Warner Home Video and Warner Bros. Animation. The film will receive its world premiere at Wizard World Chicago in late June.

From his home in New York City, Conroy spoke at length about the film, his ongoing relationship with the character, and the surprising manner in which he first approached and procured the role of Batman.

Alan Burnett Discusses “Batman Gotham Knight”

Alan Burnett has spent more consecutive years “in the Batcave” than anyone in animation history.

Not counting his stint on “Super Friends” in 1983, Burnett has constantly helped bring the Batman’s legacy to animation since 1991 – when he began scripting episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series,” the Emmy(R)-winning production widely considered a pivotal moment in American animation.

This summer, the latest animated venture into the Dark Knight’s mythos takes an altogether different approach than anything produced during Burnett’s 17-year association with the character. Burnett served as movie story editor and the writer of the anchoring segment of “Batman Gotham Knight,” the third in the ongoing series of DC Universe animated original PG-13 movies.

Kevin Conroy is Batman in Gotham Knights DVD

How cool is this? Kevin Conroy will be returning to the role he made famous in the WB Batman: Animated Series by voicing the title character in the upcoming Batman: Gotham Knight animated movie from DC Comics, Warner Premiere, Warner Home Video and Warner Bros. Animation.

“Anytime we initiate an animated Batman project, ‘Will Kevin Conroy voice Batman?’ is the first question we hear from fans,” said Bruce Timm, Executive Producer. “To meet Kevin is to know that he’s not anything like Batman, and yet he manages to perfectly nail that indefinable element that is Batman. He’s got the voice, he’s got the acting chops, and he’s absolutely the best man for the job.”

After hearing this news, I’m suddenly more excited about this direct to DVD animated movie than I was when New Frontier arrived at my door.

The Lizard Revealed

Check out Dr. Connors turned into the Lizard on this weekend’s The Spectacular Spider-Man on the Kids’ WB! on The CW.

In “Natural Selection,” Peter Parker and Spider-Man both must learn to own their choices when decisions made by Dr. Curt Connors transform Pete’s mentor into The Lizard. The episode is written by Matt Wayne and directed by David Bullock.

Interestingly the voice of Curt Connors/The Lizard is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who also voiced the character in the Activision Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro video games.

It only too three issues for the build up and reveal of Connors as the green reptile.  The Major Spoilers Podcast Panel discussed the build up to the Lizard last weekend after watching the first two episodes, and while I can understand the need to get the Lizard out there as quickly as possible (The Spectacular Spider-Man has only 13 episodes this season), I kind of wish the build up lasted a bit longer.  Perhaps if the first season were devoted to developing the relationship between Peter and Dr. Connors, and the relationship between Dr. Connors and his family, the transformation would be even more tragic. I remember it took quite a while for Harvey Dent to become Two-Face in Batman: The Animated Series, and would like to have seen it here.

Regardless, the third installment of The Spectacular Spider-Man airs Saturday, March 15 at 10:00 AM.
