Or – “Isn’t This Actually New New Avengers?”

I’ve previously made clear my reservations about Marvel editorial’s tendency to have more than one character running around with the same name, as well as having a character with MORE THAN ONE name ala Captain Marvel/Marvel Boy/Noh-Varr. My worry with having Avengers and New Avengers running concurrently was that the books would be pretty much indistinguishable other than which jumpsuits were featured in the big splash-pages. Given that this title is apparently going to be sharing personnel with THREE other teams, (possibly more, depending on how one counts) I wasn’t sure how it was all going to shake down…

As the Marvel movies continue to build to The Avengers event, the studio continues to seek actors to join the cast. Jeremy Renner is in final negotiations to join The Avengers cast as Hawkeye, the bow-and-arrow hero.
Renner will join Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man/Tony Stark, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Don Cheadle as War Machine.
I still contend that The Hulk will be a part of the movie, but the company continues to deny the involvement – at least until they can get a confirmation from Ed Norton. We should know if Renner ends up as Hawkeye soon.

The Intardwebz lit up yesterday, as concept designs for Thor and Captain America hit the net that showcased what the costumes for the film might look like. Both JoBlo.com and Ain’t It Cool News ran the Captain America images saying their inside sources tell them these designs are what Chris Evans will wear as The First Avenger. Later, images of Chris Hemsworth in Thor garb surfaced from other sites sparking speculation as to what is real and what is not.
Take the jump for a look, plus thoughts on the design.

Marvel sent Major Spoilers a sneak peek of Avengers #2 by the team of Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita, Jr.
Or – “Goddess, Thief, Centurion, Spy, Walking Tank, Mutant And Loon: Attorneys At Law.”
The Avengers have been through hell and back since the events of Avengers: Disassembled several years ago… The core membership changed, split, changed, dissolved, reassembled and split again, and the only real constant has been change itself. Now that Norm-O has been outed as the head of superhuman affairs in the Marvel U, Steve Rogers has taken over and vowed to relaunch the team in the light of the Heroic Age. But as much as he’s a star-spangled super-soldier, Rogers also has extensive experience with SHIELD, and understands the need for steath, the need for non-costumed sanctions, the need for dark-ally shenanigans. To that end, we give you… The Secret Avengers.
Or – “I Think This Is Volume Four, But I’m Not Sure It Matters…”
From the ashes of the New Avengers comes… the old Avengers! Or at least a reasonable approximation of their membership. With the Green Goblin replaced by the Super-Soldier, the time has come from heroes to step out of the shadows, free of the fear of government interference and do their Avengery thing in broad daylight. Two questions remain, though: What is Steve Rogers’ ultimate goal and WHO will he choose to populate the ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?

Too many people like to speculate and spread rumors about a movie that is still in the early stages of development, but…
Seems the Twitterverse is a buzz with word that The Avengers movie may feature the Kree-Skrull War, and not the Hulk as misunderstood villain that most expect. Three times we’ve seen the Hulk take the center stage as the big bad – Avengers #1 (1963), The Ultimates (2002), and in the Ultimate Avengers animated movie (2006), so a deviation from that would be nice, but I wonder if the concept of an interstellar war with Earth in the middle would be too much for movie goers who are not as familiar with the source material.
Marvel announced Avengers Academy #1 by Christos Gage and Mike McKone today. The issue arrives in stores in June.

One of the main reasons Disney bought Marvel was to try and develop content that would appeal to the young male crowd. Disney had mentioned it wanted more Marvel content on its DisneyXD channel, and now it looks like we are seeing that part of the plan play out with the announcement of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
“The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” — Further aligning the strength of Marvel’s hugely popular characters and stories with the burgeoning Disney XD brand and global reach, an all-new animated series, “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” will debut in fall 2010 on Disney XD and DisneyXD.com. Beginning with the “Iron Man” and “Incredible Hulk” movies in 2008, the release of “Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” follows Marvel’s overall “Avengers Assemble” strategy introducing the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe through various content platforms, including the upcoming feature films “Iron Man 2″ in May of 2010, “Thor” in May of 2011 and “Captain America” in July of 2011, all building up to the Avengers theatrical film in 2012. Produced by Marvel Animation, the animated series features 52 episodes targeted at kids 9-14, starring Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Giant Man and Wasp — who form the Avengers, a team assembled when no single hero’s powers can save the world. A 20-part “micro-series” that focuses on each hero’s backstory will roll out in fall 2010 on Disney XD, immediately followed by the series premiere on Disney XD in the U.S. and, shortly thereafter, around the world. Disney XD, the single largest distributor of Marvel content around the world, currently showcases approximately 20 hours of Marvel series (including “The Spectacular Spider-Man,” “Fantastic Four” and “Iron Man”) each week.
What does everyone think of this latest Avengers cartoon series? Are you going to find yourself watching more or less DisneyXD now?
