Top Ten: Ten Great Unfinished Tales

Or – “Where The Heck Is My Battle Chasers #10?”

In recent weeks of the Major Spoilers Podcast TPB reviews, we’ve looked at several stories that never got a proper ending, be it due to schedules, monetary difficulties, or the attention span of a fruitfly.  Some have been sublime, others ridiculous, but in all cases our enjoyment of the stories seemed to be affected by their incomplete status.  It got me to thinking about how many of my favorite stories over the years never got a proper ending, appropriate closure, or even a climactic explosion where the hero skates away in triumph…

On the Next Major Spoilers Podcast: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

What film caused Alan Moore to spit vile venom at H’wood, and cause Sean Connery to retire from acting forever?  It’s the “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, of course (hint: it was right there in the title of this post).  While the movie version might be touched on, the Major Spoilers Crew plan on diving into the first volume of the Alan Moore series in the next Major Spoilers Podcast.

From the Wiki!

According to Moore, the initial concept behind the series was initially a “Justice League of Victorian England” but quickly grew into an opportunity to merge all works of fiction into one world. Says Moore: “The planet of the imagination is as old as we are. It has been humanity’s constant companion with all of its fictional locations, like Mount Olympus and the gods, and since we first came down from the trees, basically. It seems very important, otherwise, we wouldn’t have it.”[1] Moore and O’Neill have revealed that they plan to map out many different eras in the League series with Allan Quatermain and Mina Murray being the two constants.

Who Watches the Watchmen? Not As Many As You Might Think

watchmen002.jpg

As expected, the Zack Snyder adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ masterpiece Watchmen was the top movie this past weekend bringing in $55.7 million domestically and $83.2 million worldwide.  As great as that news is, Watchmen didn’t open as high as some had expected, not even meeting Zack Snyder’s last film, 300, which brought in $70.9 million domestically.

As hyped as audiences were after seeing the trailer that was tacked on to the Dark Knight Returns movie, I wonder what could be the reason for the lower than expected numbers?  Fans loyal to Alan Moore, boycotting the film?  Too much hype that overloaded and turned off potential audience?  Those waiting until next weekend to see the film in hopes of avoiding the large crowds this past weekend?  The R rating and two hour forty minute run time? Or is it the economy?

Those expressing caution turned out to have been right, so Warners had to manage expectations after the fact.

A substantial roadblock was “Watchmen’s” running time of 2:40. At that length, theaters couldn’t play as many runs of the pic as they did “300,” which ran under two hours.

“It truly makes a huge difference. Every studio wanted to attach their trailer to ‘Watchmen,’ so it ended up being more like three hours. When a movie is 2:40, there’s only one main show a day,” Warners prexy of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said. “We’re pleased with the opening.”

I went and saw the movie on Sunday, and there were less than a dozen people in the theater; great for me as I didn’t have to worry about all the talkers as I spilled nacho cheese everywhere, but not so good for those hoping comic book movies will remain strong draws at the box office.

Don’t forget, for those that did see the movie, we do have a talk back post for you to weigh in your thoughts.

On The Next Major Spoilers Podcast: Watchmen

watchmenbanner.jpg

Yes, just like very other comic book podcast in existence, the Major Spoilers crew will take a look at one of the most important graphic novels to have ever been written: Ragedy Anne and Andy Go to Candy Land Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen.

Moore used the story as a means to reflect contemporary anxieties and to deconstruct the superhero concept. Watchmen takes place in an alternate history United States where the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, freelance costumed vigilantes have been outlawed and most costumed superheroes are in retirement or working for the government. The story focuses on the personal development and struggles of the protagonists as an investigation into the murder of a government sponsored superhero pulls them out of retirement and eventually leads them to confront a plot by one of their own to stave off nuclear war by killing millions of innocent people.

Review: Black Lightning Year One #4

When it all went to hell

blacklightning4picon.jpg

For the most part, the Year One stories from DC Comics tend to follow the origin stories of the characters with a little extra thrown in for taste.  In the case of Black Lightning, it looks like an entire retcon is taking place.  The Tobias Whale plot is still there, but toss in a dose of magic and mysticism, and Talia al Ghul and you’ve got a very different story from the one you read in the 1970’s.

swampthingbook1.jpg

Vertigo, an imprint of DC Comics, has announced Alan Moore’s Saga of the Swamp Thing will be collected for the first time in hardcover form, and will arrive in stores on February 11, 2009.  This 208 page edition collects issues 20-27 where Alan Moore began as the series writer.

Book 1 begins with the story “The Anatomy Lesson,” where Moore and his collaborators Stephen Bissette and John Totleben, whose imaginative, genre-breaking artwork, set the gothic tone of the journey to come. By building on the character’s foundations in horror, this creative team delivers a haunting origin story that reshapes his mythology with terrifying revelations. When the creature that once believed he was scientist Alec Holland discovers his true nature, he realizes that he is something far less human than he previously believed. And with the resurrected DC villain the Floronic Man attacking the issues of pollution and consumption of natural resources, SWAMP THING’s journey is one of discovery and adventure that will eventually take him across the stars and beyond.

Saga of the Swamp Thing Book 1 will set you back $24.99.
