First off, thanks for the podcast guys. Great job, hope to hear more from you in our ears in the future!
Secondly, my thoughts. This was much better than I thought – I enjoyed how it blended together all movies that came before it into one nice story. Some plot holes, some things that I felt could have been better explored, but overall a better movie than First Class by far in my opinion.
However, I still sincerely dislike the direction of “rebooting” the X-Men history the way that they did. First Class was a bad movie, in my opinion, though I know it’s well received by many, many others.
How did Magneto even get captured? They never went into that, at all. What happened between he and Mystique that turned their relationship sour? What has Hank McCoy been doing the last 10 years or so while Xavier has been wallowing? The other mutants from the end of First Class — how did they meet their demise? Hey it’s Havok and Toad and….oh, guess we don’t need to have them in any more of the movie….
I think Singer did a lot of good in this movie, but dropped the ball a bit with some of the characters.
I agree with you. I’d love this movie to be 4 hours long. It wouldn’t be fit for public consumption at that length, but I’d love to see it. All of the nit-picks you mention would be answered in that version, and there’d be 3 extra story-lines.
I didn’t see the actors in this film, and I’m a very cynical writer and cinema-phile. They melted into their characters, which I was very amazed to see. Generally, comic book movies lately have been like the popular clique in high school. They’re pretty until they open their mouths. This film (and X-men comics in general) represent the outcasts, the people who spend more time in isolation, in self-examination. Therefore, when they do speak, they actually have something interesting to say. They’ve thought about things, and they’re perspective is very well thought out. This is what a comic book adaptation should be.
I can see what’s being said in this review. I suggest avoiding thoughts about the actors in other things, or as you think of them in the industry. It just doesn’t have any bearing on any individual project or performance by these people. As someone who avoids trailers (for the very reason you bring up), I’d encourage you (as hard as it might be) to do the same. Be confident in your initial impressions of an upcoming film. Because if you’re worried about trailers spoiling things. Advertising 101.
Love your work. Keep it up.
PS…in the timeline, the new future begins in 1973. Therefore, every X-men film except ‘First Class’ has been erased. All of them. And I couldn’t be happier.
I’ll reiterate what Matt said above me, great podcast Ashley and Jason! I think you guys hit on all the important points of the movie as I see it,
I do have one point that I feel should be brought up though, and that is the climax of the third act. It’s established early on that once Wolverine slips back forward through time, the timeline will shift and he will be the only one remembering anything about the original timeline. Now, you’d think that this means that there is something that he needs to do before he can go back again in order to significantly change the timeline. You’d think that, but you’d be wrong.
Singer instead ties the last stand in the future, where everyone is holding on for as long as they can to give Wolverine all the time they can, to Mystique having to choose between killing or not killing Trask. After the Logan-Xavier-McCoy trio decides to go to the press conference, there is nothing Wolverine does that really impacts the resolution of the film. He could have hopped back in time after letting Charles dug around in his head for a while, and everything could have played out exactly the same except for the fact that he would not be on the bottom of the river ready for another spinoff movie or something.
I suppose this is yet another thing that points towards the myriad of plot holes in the film, and the “Oh hey Jennifer Lawrence is a big star now, guess we better make the movie all about her!”-syndrom. This really bothered me though, it really was a big Chekov’s gun that never even left the mantlepiece. It makes the whole last minutes of the future timeline fall completely flat for me, because they held on and got killed just so that Wolverine could get his ass kicked by Magneto and drown at the bottom of the river. It made no sense at all to me.
And somehow in spite of this, I enjoyed the movie. I suppose that I’m just glad that there is something good in there at all.
I really liked this movie. I’m aware that it has several plot holes, but none of them bothered me that much.
I only wish we’d seen more of the mutants in the future. Bishop, Sunspot and Blink were really cool and I would’ve liked to see more of them.
And about some of the things you commented on the podcast (great job, by the way!):
* My personal auto-explanation for Kitty’s powers is simply that her powers grew so now not only she’s capable to phase through space (walls and thing like that), but she’s also capable to phase through time.
* Jennifer Lawrence’s performance didn’t bothered me at all. I think she was a very good Mystique and since I really like the character of Mystique, I’m glad she had such a big role here.
The only thing that bothers me is this: how did Erick manage to wire iron into the sentinels without even seeing the wagon the sentinels were in? Any guesses?
That’s it. Again, great job guys! I’m looking forward to hear more from you!
Thanks for this great epidode Ashley and Jason, hope to heat more from you soon!
As far as the movie goes, i enjoyed it very much. As somebody who is not to familiar with the comic books, I thought it had quite some clever ideas, Professor Xaviers addiction for example. The cast is really great, and Jennifer Lawrence didn´t annoy me, I did´t thought she was on screen to much. Fassbender, McAvoy, Jackman and Steward ded terrific work also.
TBH I enjoyed this one more than any “real” Marvel Movie, where I find the stories lackluster most of the time. But that´s just like my opinion, man!
