Major Spoilers Poll of the Week
This week, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie arrives in theaters, and though it is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the interest level for the movie appears to be high… right? At the other end of the summer, Guardians of the Galaxy arrives in theaters, and generally, people seem confused about the concept and how it does fit into the MCU.

Just wanted to note that I confirmed in app purchases work on an android phone, without going through Google Play. I used my $5 credit and then some to pick up the first Wonder Woman arc from Gail Simone.
When you log in to the new android app for the first time it asks for your comixology website username and password. When you checkout it uses the same payment method that you have integrated on the website (in my case, paypal). I like paying through google play better, but its really not any more of a hassle than normal.
It seems like a no-brainer to make this same functionality available to iOS users. Is there anything in the iOS terms of use that would prevent the app from working this way?
I mostly read my comics on my 8.9″ Kindle Fire, so the iOS app change doesn’t affect me directly. That said I would love to be able to add everything to my cart in-app, then either use the amazon link on majorspoilers.com or an affiliate code or some other method to get some credit back to the site. Many of my purchases come after listing to MSP and deciding to check out what the gang has been talking about. There should definitely be a way for the site to benefit from this service more directly.
Yeah, Android users made out well with this update. As I understand it, Apple requires all payments or purchases made within any iOS app to use their payment processing system, after which they take a 30% cut. This makes sense if you’re a small game dev team that doesn’t want to worry about credit card fraud or setting up a retail system, but it really makes little sense for things like Comixology that already has all of that backend in place for their website. As I hear it, Apple is pretty inflexible on this percentage. Who knows what the future holds, though.
So, I totally read the book series Garfield’s Pet Force when I was in elementary/middle school.
I was so excited to hear that it got remade as a comic book.
Stephen! :-) You’re trying to tell us that because “you have to go through another step”, that you have not bought a comic digitally in over a week? Are you not the same one that tells us, the listeners, to come here to Major Spoilers first if we are going to buy anything from Amazon, so we can click on your link, so you can get a little something out of it? Why is it okay for us to do so, but it seems to be … according to you … such a burden to have to click to an additional site when buying comics? You have been saying for months (on other podcasts) how you’ve been not into comics as much recently? Could that be the real reason you are not buying as many comics? I understand what you are saying by in large, as yes, it is a pain to have to go to 26 different publisher site’s to get all the comics you want to buy while having just one site is so much easier, but I think it is not as horrible a thing to have to do as you think it is.
Plus, why should Marvel or any company pay money for someone else to distribute their property, when in theory, they could save the money that Comixology (or similar) charges them and pass those savings on to us, the consumer (that is what I am waiting for … and it may be a very long wait)?
And I mean all of this is the friendliest way possible. HA, not trying to be a jerk (but with print, as you know, it is hard to tell) but just an honest question :-)
When that comment was made, I stated a fact – I haven’t purchased digital comics in over a week, not because of an additional step, but because ComiXology has changed it’s methods of purchasing since the last time I purchased a digital comic (over a week ago) and I felt the extra step needed was (potentially) a barrier to buying. Rodrigo even agreed with that thought process. Take a listen to the most recent Dueling Review episode and you’ll hear me talk about my experience under the new model. I still believe comiXology/Amazon’s decision kills browsability and impulse buying.
I have been saying on the podcast for months that I haven’t been reading as many comics lately – I usually follow that up with A) because I’ve been busy, or B) I’m not reading as many “capes and tights” comics like I used to, instead reading more comics from smaller publishers. In this episode specifically, I said that using the “old” comiXology app made it easier for small-er publishers to be found. While using the comiXology.com website yesterday to buy comics, I tested this, and yes, finding the indie books is still much harder than it used to be, or should be.
As far as asking people to visit Major Spoilers to use the Amazon.com link to make their purchases, that is a lot different than making people go through the Major Spoilers site in order to get to the Amazon site. That is what is going on with comiXology right now – you have to go through a different doorway to actually make the purchase.
By the way Perry, if you have used the Amazon.com link to make a purchase, I want to thank you for doing that. You are helping us ensure that there is a platform for you to share your thoughts and opinions, in a “safe” environment, and hopefully you are getting continued enjoyment out of the content we are creating for you.
In regards to why should Marvel pay someone else to distribute their property – they already do that through a company called Diamond Comic Distributors, who do take a cut of the cover price. Years ago, there were multiple distributors working with different publishers to deliver comics, and it was a nightmare at best from what the old comic store managers have told me. Now, with a single distributor, comics all come in on the same day, they only have one order to place, and deal with a single point of contact. If the digital comics industry went to a method where every publisher had their own app to purchase comics through it would be a hassle for new titles to get in front of a new reader. This may be one of the reasons why the comiXology app was ranked so high in the App store, and the Dark Horse Comics app never made a blip on the ranked lists. If you don’t know a publisher exists, how are you supposed to find their app? That is what makes comiXology a good thing, in that you can find all of the comics in one place.
Finally, do people really think a publisher would reduce the cost of a comic simply because their overhead has been reduced, when they could instead increase their profit margin? The argument was made a long time ago, that simply removing the printing cost of comics that were delivered digitally should reduce the price to the consumer, but it hasn’t at all. And with the LCS removed from the equation as well, one is only dealing with the digital distributor, and thus costs should be greatly reduced. The argument that the cover price is the same digitally as it is in print to make the LCS happy is suspicious at best, especially when profit margins are involved.
In regards to the comment about you not trying to be a jerk – I don’t think you are. You have a question, and hopefully I have answered it for you.
Thanks for commenting! The more people that participate in the comment section, and the more people who engage with one another, the more learning, fun, and entertainment can be had!
Well thanks for the reply Stephen, but man, I re-read what I wrote yesterday and I tell ya … it still comes across harsher than intended. HAHA. Bottom line, I get WHY you are telling people about the Amazon link, but it just seemed like you were complaining about clinking more links to get to point “b” and I found that humorous when you ask the same thing from us. You have stated in the past that if we are going to use Amazon, just swing by here first and make everyone happy. Not condemning you for it, but there is a similarity between what you asked and what you are complaining about. That is all I was trying to say.
As far as Marvel (or anyone) reducing their price, I did say it would probably be a very long wait. I am well aware of corporate practice. haha. I meant that as a jab at myself more than anything.
Anyway, take care and as always, love what you guys do!!
