BOOM! Studios spills digital comics all over the place

Earlier this week, BOOM! Studios announced its all new iPad application for purchasing and viewing the company’s digital comics.  While the title selection is relatively small right now, the interest in the application was enough to drive the app to the number seven position just behind Marvel in the Free Book App category of the iTunes App store.

If BOOM! has any hope of surpassing the competition, the company is going to need to do two things; increase the number of titles and issues available, and really consider day and date release.  The first hurdle is already being worked on as the company told me that they plan on having their entire backlist of titles available to consumers by the end of the 2010 summer season.

“BOOM! Studios is aggressively committed to getting our comics and graphic novels into the hands of fans everywhere,” said BOOM! Studios Marketing Director Chip Mosher. “By offering our comics digitally we’ve made it easier than ever for new and old fans alike to access our growing library of acclaimed comics. Stay tuned! This is just the start of our digital roll out with much more to come!”

The second issue of Day and Date is going to be more of a challenge, as it appears most publishers are taking the wait and see approach to Day and Date, and it looks like it will hinge on Marvel’s Invincible Iron Man stunt it will be pulling in a few weeks.

For those wondering if the company announcement will include Disney titles, we’ve been told it does not, as Disney has its own comic book app.

Dark Horse announce DH:HD

USA Today, Toshiba, and Dark Horse have announced a very interesting venture where the trio will bring comics to your desktop, doorstep, and digital TV.  The press release from the company is a little vague on how Toshiba or the HD tag will be incorporated into the Dark Horse campaign, but we do know that USA Today will showcase exclusive content from the comic book publisher.

“As an entertainment company, Dark Horse prides itself on pushing the boundaries with groundbreaking creators and content,” said Mike Richardson, president and publisher of Dark Horse Comics. “We’re excited to continue this tradition by showcasing some of our most exciting stories in this all-new program with these great partners.”

It all kicks off today with a look at author Janet Evanovich’s graphic novel, Troublemaker, in USA Today.

UPDATE:  Dark Horse did get in touch with me to clear up some of the Toshiba confusion.  While Dark Horse will not be creating any content specifically for Toshiba TVs, the company will be showing the Dark Horse video loop on Toshiba HDTVs at both the San Diego Comic-Con and New York Comic-Con later this year.

Ghost Rider 2 seeks directors

Columbia Pictures is in negotiations with Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor to direct Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the sequel to the 2007 Nic Cage Ghost Rider flick.  Cage is also in early talks to return to the flaming bike as Johnny Blaze.

There’s no early news on the David Goyer story, or what villains will be involved, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio hopes to be in production by late fall.  It’s all well and good, but as was pointed out recently, will it really hurt the franchise if Nicolas Cage doesn’t return as Johnny Blaze?  What about Danny Ketch? And since everyone is so down on the first film, why not follow the trend (something Sony is good at) and call this movie Ghost Rider: Reboot?

Major Spoilers Poll of the Week: Red or Blue?

Superman has been around for a very long time, and has had many things happen to him. On of which was the Superman Red/Superman Blue storyline that occurred in 1963, and then adapted again in 1998.

In the Superman Red/Superman Blue one-shot (February 1998), a trap created by the Cyborg-Superman caused Superman to split into two beings who represented different aspects of his personality, though each believed himself to be the original. Superman Blue was the more cerebral entity, preferring to think his way out of situations and actually solve problems with his mind as well as his powers. Superman Red was more trash, but also more decisive, preferring action over taking the time to think. Over time these two personalities grew more and more polarized and individual, to the point that neither entity wanted to become one Superman again.

This begs the question

Of the two, which Superman did you prefer more?
