This week, Major Spoilers turned six years old! As Major Spoilers celebrates its sixth year as a source for pop culture and comic book information, I sit back and look at where we were, and though it should be a happy time, I find myself so very frustrated.

Six years ago this week, I sat at my then kitchen table and on a lark registered the domain and set up WordPress on a small partition of server space given to me by a colleague I was working with at the time. Over time, Major Spoilers has moved to three different servers, began serving over one million unique visitors, launched four podcasts, spun off one new site, and found a cadre of people who have embraced the Major Spoilers Experience.
That’s certainly a lot of accomplishments from any perspective, but two kids, a new mortgage, an additional 50 pounds, a new real world job title and all the headaches that go with that, and 10,000 lost follicles later, I sit, knowing what Major Spoilers has planned for the year ahead, and its killing me that I can’t tell you about it right now.
“Why not?” you ask, “This site is called Major Spoilers!”
Well, Dear Reader, I do get the irony, but to be fair to all, if I spoiled everything now, you wouldn’t have between now and this time next year to ponder, wonder, and speculate what is to come.
Of course there is that little thing called Time that is holding most of what we are doing at Major Spoilers back, but hopefully, with growing support from the Major Spoilers community, more of that precious commodity will be available so we can continue to improve what we’ve been doing.
Year Five was filled with some really great moments that I think were wonderful, and that will continue as we move through Year Six.
MAJOR SPOILERS
The site has had its ups and downs, but this year we had the opportunity to move to a brand new server that appears to be faster and more stable than ever before. And that’s a good thing because a strong server is the backbone for what is coming in Year Six. Traffic has increased, and I hope that more of you will help spread the word and send our numbers over the top during the next twelve months.
PODCASTS
If you haven’t notice, I love talking about comics and pop culture stuffs, and this year, our podcasts once again surpassed my expectations.
The Major Spoilers Podcast – Launched during Major Spoilers: Year Two, the Major Spoilers Podcast continues to bring in new listeners who are interested in the comic book and and pop culture industries. This year saw a huge jump in interviews and special guests, and we’ve reviewed more books than every before.
Critical HIt – With a great story by Rodrigo, and an expanded Dungeons and Dragons experience whipped up by D&D Brian, Matthew, Adriana, and Rob, Critical Hit: A Major Spoilers Dungeons and Dragons Podcast, which launched during the Major Spoilers: Year Four celebration, has become a real hit on iTunes, hitting the number one podcast in the Other Games category for most of the year.
Top Five – What started out as part of the Major Spoilers: Year Five Celebration, Top Five turned into a show in demand, and spun off a whole new bi-weekly series, that spawns a lot of discussion by our listeners.
Munchkin Land – During Nerdtacular 2012, I became enthralled with the Steve Jackson Games Munchkin. If you at the Nerdtacular 2012 Podcast Producers panel, I even hinted at a Munchkin podcast. What initially started as a show to celebrate Major Spoilers: Year Six, Munchkin Land is now its own show with new episodes arriving on a monthly basis.
The Morning Stream – Because I can’t shut-up, you may have heard me Monday morning on Scott Johnson and Brian Ibbott’s The Morning Stream, where I dish on comic book and movie news that you are dying to learn about. These appearances are a lot of fun, and I thank Scott and Brian for having me on each week. It gives me a chance to gab, plus it brings new readers (like some of you) to the site [...]</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Or – “I’d Say The Pulps Are Back, But They Never Really Went Away…”

The Major Spoilers podcast crew each has our specialties and expertise, which serves us well in our nattering about the vagaries of various universes and the denizens thereof. But once in a while, it’s fun to switch it up and play in each other’s sandboxes. Though I’m nowhere near the pulp fiction connoisseur that Stephen is, I know the big names, and was intrigued to see how Dynamite Entertainment would put their stamp on the fedora-and-cloak wearing mystery man known as The Spider: Master Of Men!

THE SPIDER #1
Writer: David Liss
Artist: David Worley
Cover Artist(s): Alex Ross/John Cassaday/Francesco Francavilla/Ron Lesser
Letterer: Simon Bowland
Editor: Joe Rybandt
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
Previously, in The Spider: Richard Wentworth was very lucky during the Great Depression, as his own business interests continued to flourish, making him one of the wealthiest men in New York. As often happens with millionaire playboys, though, Richard found himself lacking direction, and only found his calling after putting on a cloak, hat and vampire-inspired stage makeup, taking to the streets to terrorize the underworld and punish the guilty. He struck back against racketeers, criminals and those who would poison my brothers with the pulp heroes most formidable weapon, swift and blinding violence, and left his bright red web imprinted in the faces of those whose criminal tendencies he corrected (usually fatally.) He knows what evil lurks… Wait, that’s the other guy… Um… He is aware of the darkness that hides in the souls of people? Either way, he’ll kick some 1930′s butt.
“THE SPIDER STRIKES!”
There is, in my experience, a problem with pulp heroes in practice. Taken out of their Depression/WWII-era purview, they sometimes lose their potency. On the other hand, many times a period piece ends up getting written off as antique fan fiction, leaving anyone wanting to revive them with a double-edged sword in a room full of helium balloons. Dynamite chooses the first tack with The Spider, showing us a modern New York in the very first panel, albeit one that seems almost futuristic, with floating airships and a tangible sense of grime and degeneracy. For a comparison, one might consider the film version of The Crow, and artist Worley really delivers in his rendition of the city gone to seed. A traditional first-person narrative is in place here, as The Spider explains his motivations and his brutal intentions, gunning down a couple of criminals before they can assault a young girl and sell her into slavery. “What gives me the right to decide who lives and dies?” he asks. “Not a damn thing.” With that single sentence, David Liss has put The Spider on my pull list before I have even completed the first half of the first issue.
“THE ULTIMATE ANSWER TO EVIL!”

Though the venue has changed a bit, The Spider is still a merciless vigilante, branding the guilty with his Spider’s Mark calling card, wearing a version of his traditional togs (although this one is strongly influenced by the web-covered-cape that was developed in his movie serial days) and engaging in a nuanced ally/enemy relationship with Police Commissioner Kirkpatrick, who trusts Wentworth but wants the murderous Spider behind bars. Love interest Nita Von Sloan is in evidence (with a modern twist put on their relationship) as well as The Spider’s manservant/aide-de-camp Ram Singh, who gets the line of the issue, telling a racist cop who threatens to deport him, “I was born in Teaneck.” Heh. The modern setting still has a very pulp vibe (all the police officers wear stylish hats) and the introduction of our villain/macguffin is extremely well handled, with a phone call to the crime scene telling us everything we need to know about the unseen mastermind. “People are going to die,” [...]</itunes:summary>

This week, in “Bounty,” an aimless Asajj Ventress joins a team of bounty hunters under the leadership of young Boba Fett. On an alien world, they undertake a dangerous but profitable mission that tests the limits of their skills, and the strength of Asajj’s character.
Dengar – one of the bounty hunters seen in the company of Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back – is coming to The Clone Wars, and actor Simon Pegg (Star Trek and Shaun of the Dead) is playing him in this week’s episode.

<itunes:summary>Or – “The Great Book With The Spectacularly Unattractive Covers…”

Ever since Joe Quesada’s guest-shot wraparound cover for issue #600, I’ve been struck each month how weird some of the covers for the Fantastic Four title look. Just glancing at this cover on the stands, I was confused as to why Reed Richards would take the time to cop a feel during a giant intergalactic crisis situation. Maybe it’s just the coloring, but this issue’s cover is just flat weird looking…
So… How’s the actual book?

FANTASTIC FOUR #603
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Barry Kitson
Colorist: Paul Mounts
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Editor: Tom Brevoort
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Previously, in Fantastic Four: The arrival of Galactus is always something to worry about, but when he’s come to Earth to fend off an invasion of the equally-powerful and doubly-crazy Celestials, it’s pretty much a can full of Armageddon. Of course, at the same time, the Kree Armada is attacking, and the only thing that can hold it off is the (once again) equally-powerful Annihilation Wave. All in all, the cure is just as deadly and catastrophic as the metaphorical disease. Also, Valeria Richards may have betrayed her entire reality. So, that’s fun…
“LOOK THERE AND SEE THAT GALACTUS STANDS AGAINST YOU!”
So, last issue ended with a tense confrontation between Galactus, The World Devourer and the host of the Celestials standing nose to nose (figuratively, as only the Big G has a nose.) Four space-giants versus the last survivor of the universe that existed BEFORE ours, each empowered with the Power Kirby? $#!+ just got real. Even the massive, jaded intellect of Reed Richards is left a gibbering child in the face of the battle that ensues, and even the Fantastic Four has to retreat as the entire sky opens up with power undreamt of. It’s pretty awesome, honestly, and serves to solve the secondary problem, as the onslaught of giants slugging it out causes the Kree to flee (dum dee dee) and the Inhuman battle-cruiser follows suit. The art of Barry Kitson is a huge change from Juan Bobillo on the sister title, FF, and I have to say I much prefer the work in this issue. The moment wherein Galactus plows into the assembled Celestials like Randy Orton in a handicap match is truly amazing, and the sheer amount of Kirby dots involved put a huge smile on my face. I also enjoy how it’s Susan Richards (whom I have long believed to be the steel in the spine of the FF) is the one who takes command in the face of a godlike clusterschmozz, with a little help from Valeria’s Hail, Mary, as seen in the last issue of the FF title…
FUTURE FOUNDATION? L’IL BIT, YEAH…
Page ten of this issue is a literal “Holy Crap” moment for me, which you simply have to see to believe… (Suffice to say that Galen of Taa hasn’t had a beatdown like this in the memory of any living being in OUR universe.) The remainder of the issue has the Fantastic Four returning home to find out what Valeria has been up to, but what strikes me the most is how subtle the art is. Franklin’s resemblance to his uncle and mom is wonderful, as well as the subtle traits shared by Reed, his father and his daughter. It’s always difficult to deal with these kind of facial feature issues, but Kitson seems to do it effortlessly, which strengthens the ending of the issue even more, as the members of the Fantastic Four battle Celestials one-on-one. It’s Sue who lasts the longest, I might add, and Sue who is the only one conscious to remember the prophetic words: “There will be a moment when you’re going to want to give up… When you reach that point, look into the sky.” She does, and the final full-page splash of the issue is awesome, inspiring and terrifying all at once. I cannot bear to spoiler it for you, you’ll have to check it out, but it’s a doozy…
THE VERDICT: WORTHY OF STAN & [...]</itunes:summary>
