This week, Zach learns what the terms Film Noir and McGuffin mean, as he gets dark and gritty in John Huston’s 1941 classic, The Maltese Falcon.
Zach on Film: M (1931)
This week, things get dark and serious when Zach goes inside the mind of child killer in Fritz Lang’s 1931 classic, M.
A simple, haunting musical phrase whistled offscreen tells us that a young girl will be killed. “Who is the Murderer?” pleads a nearby placard as serial killer Hans Beckert, played by Peter Lorre (Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon), closes in on little Elsie Beckmann. In his harrowing masterwork M, Fritz Lang (Metropolis, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse) merges trenchant social commentary with chilling suspense, creating a panorama of private madness and public hysteria that to this day remains the blueprint for the psychological thriller.

Zach on Film: The Great Escape (1963)
Zach watches The Great Escape, and has a few opinions about it.
The Great Escape is a 1963 American film about an escape by Allied prisoners of war from a German POW camp during World War II, starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Richard Attenborough. The film is based on the book of the same name by Paul Brickhill, a non-fiction account of the mass escape from Stalag Luft III in Sagan (now Żagań, Poland), in the province of Lower Silesia, Nazi Germany. The characters are composites of real men. The film was made by the Mirisch Company, released by United Artists, and produced and directed by John Sturges.

Zach on Film 01: The Magnificent Seven (1960)
This week, Zach sits down to watch The Magnificent Seven.
The Magnificent Seven is a 1960 American western film directed by John Sturges. It is a western-style remake based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai. The film stars Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, and Horst Buchholz who play a group of seven American gunmen who are hired to protect a small agricultural village in Mexico from a group of marauding native bandits led by Calvera, portrayed by Eli Wallach. The film’s musical score was composed by Elmer Bernstein.

Major Spoilers #506: Zach on Film: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1966)
In this episode, Zach sits down and learns all about the Spaghetti Western as we look at The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a 1966 Italian epic Spaghetti western film directed by Sergio Leone, starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in the title roles respectively. Director of photography Tonino Delli Colli was responsible for the film’s sweeping widescreen cinematography and Ennio Morricone composed the famous film score, including its main theme. It is the third film in the Dollars Trilogy following A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965). The plot revolves around three gunslingers competing to find a fortune in buried Confederate gold amid the violent chaos of gunfights, hangings, American Civil War battles and prison camps.
