As previously reported, Warner Bros. plans on releasing a direct to DVD animated anthology of shorts that cover the time period between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Each of the six shorts will be done in an anime style with stories provided by six well known writers (Josh Olson, David Goyer, Alan Burnett, Greg Rucka, Jordan Goldberg and Brian Azzarello). Warner Bros. has now announced that the DVD will hit store shelves July 8, just ten days before the July 18, 2008 release of The Dark Knight in theaters. The single-disc version of Batman: GothamKnight will have an MSRP…

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Bros. are teaming up to bring Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira to the screen as a live action adaptation. No word if DiCaprio will be screaming Kanada! or not, but as one would expect with the translation, things are going to be changed, for what I fear will be the worst. The new story moves the action to “New Manhattan,” a city rebuilt by Japanese money. Yikes! There’s a red flag right there. On the plus side, the film will mark the directorial debut of Ruairi Robinson, who has been hired to direct…

Even though Fox is trying to stop Warner Bros. from completing the film, Executive Producer Herb Gains has a report on the final days of shooting. As we approach the last days of shooting Watchmen — yes, the end is nigh — it’s time to reflect on the whole Watchmen experience. I think back to January 2007 when I first met Zack and he walked me through his drawings for the title sequence. I remember my initial reaction was, How can we shoot all of it? Why do we have to shoot all that? And if we do, how do…

Who watches the Watchmen? No one if Fox has its way. The writer’s strike cost Hollywood an estimated 2 billion dollars, and it looks like movie company is trying to recoup some of that lost revenue by suing Warner Bros. over the film rights to the Watchmen movie. According to an article in the Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox holds the exclusive copyrights and contract rights to the Alan Moore inspired film. Fox claims that between 1986 and 1990, it acquired all movie rights to the 12-issue DC Comics series and screenplays by Charles McKeown and Sam Hamm. In 1991,…

Variety is reporting that Greg Berlanti has been hired by Warner Bros. to write and direct the Green Lantern movie.  Berlanti will share writing duties with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Guggenheim, who works with Berlanti as a writer-producer on “Brothers & Sisters,” wrote the Marvel comicbooks “Amazing Spider-Man,” “Wolverine” and “Blade.” Green, the “Heroes” co-exec producer who worked with Berlanti on “Everwood” and “Jack & Bobby,” wrote the Marvel Comics title “Superman/Batman” and was a writer-producer on “Smallville.” It’s good to see that even a big name mag like Variety has a problem remembering Superman/Batman is a DC title…

We announced a while back that the Flash movie had been shelved, but now that the JLA movie is moving forward, it looks as though the studios are reexamining their decision. According to MTV, David Dobkin has been hired to direct a stand alone Flash movie that will be a spin-off from the Justice League flick. Dobkin’s film won’t be the character’s first appearance in cinemas, of course, with the Flash a major part of the upcoming “Justice League of America” film. But while fans wait for “JLA” story and casting announcements with bated breath, Dobkin can’t help but hold…

According to Moviehole, Teresa Palmer has been offered the role of Wonder Woman in the George Miller Justice League film. This follows the rumor that Rupert Evans will be playing Superman. Reports have this movie being all action, but with a much younger team of heroes in the early points of their careers. This has made many people wonder why not do a Teen Titans flick, but if you consider more people know Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Batman and Superman, than cyborg, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and Robin, then you can kind of see the direction Warner Bros. is…

From his message board, Mark Millar says he’ll do a new Superman script completely for free. It’s 8.58am right now, my guys at CAA get into the office in about seven hours and my call will be waiting for them to talk about this. I want to revamp Superman like Hillary wants thin ankles. Revamping this franchise is what I as given fingers for and so, invited or not, I’m putting my plan together now. I’ve been asked to work on half a dozen screenplays lately, but this is the only one I have ever truly wanted. As most here…

According to Variety Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris have decided not to return to write the sequel to the Superman Returns movie.  Opted not to return, or asked not to return?  Considering the negative criticism the film received from movie goers, this sounds like a great PR stunt to let them bow out gracefully. A potential writer’s strike is just days away, leaving the WB scrambling for new writers while at the same time trying to figure out who will play Superman in the Justice League movie. Marvel Studios is adopting that let’s-try-again strategy with “The Hulk” at Universal, hoping…
