SDCC’11: Relativity Media and Atlas team for Voltron movie

Relativity Media has announced that the the studio has optioned the rights for VOltron, with plans to send the property to the big screen.

In Voltron, an elite battle force defends the fate of mankind in the spectacular action adventure. Five young warriors are responsible for the future of the galaxy when they become pilots of a battalion of ultra-high-tech Robot Lions, powerful vessels with the ability to join together to form a fearsome mega-weapon known as “Voltron.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard the news that Voltron was getting a feature film, and each time production seems to stall. This time it looks like there are a number of producers behind the live-action film including Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven, Richard Suckie, and Kickstart Entertainment’s Jason Netter.

The movie is being written by Conan the Barbarian scribe, Thomas Dean Donnelly.

Voltron is looking for a writer

If you know how to write, and write well, the UTA may be interested in having your agent contact their agent as the rep company is helping to bring a writer on board for the upcoming Voltron movie.

The agency hopes Voltron’s widespread brand recognition and elaborate mythology, which have served properties like “Transformers” well but doesn’t necessarily exist with other board games and toy properties in development, will appeal to audiences and executives.

The pitch is expected to include the idea that, unlike other toy brands, Voltron — in which five robot lions piloted by humans become a giant warrior — allows for human-centric stories.

If you’re wondering what other toy related movies might be coming down the pipe, I suggest you take a walk down the toy aisle at your local Duckwall, as there a good chance that RonCo Daisy Spinner transforming action figure is next on the block.

Voltron movie a go – Again!

Even though the Major Spoilers Crew didn’t care very much for the Transformers 2 movie, giant robots are still a big deal for H’wood.  Those of us who were around in 1984 and 1985 remember the tiger-shaped robots that connected to form Voltron.  And for those of us who liked Voltron then, the news that a live action Voltron movie should have us jumping around like the boy down the street who got his hands on sugar for the first time.

Atlas Entertainment, the group behind Get Smart, are producing the film that hasn’t found a studio yet.  Word is Warner Bros. is hot to trot on Robotech or some other giant robot franchise to counter Paramount’s Transformers hit.  While it seems Hollywood is keen on robots, I wonder how many of you are interested in Voltron?
