Or – “Sex & Violence And All That Other Fun Stuff…” My recent review of Bomb Queen got me thinking about adult themes in comics.  When handled well, they can mean the difference between Captain Atom and Doctor Manhattan.  When utilized poorly, we can be faced with ‘Sultry Teenage Super-Foxes.’  (I wouldn’t necessarily google that one.)  In the early days of Vertigo, Grant Morrison took advantage of the Mature Readers tag, channeled the spirit of the (then-recent) ‘Natural Born Killers,’ and went for broke with a story that I remember fondly to this day… **This Retro Review is Grant Morrison…

Or – “The Storyarc That Started It All…” People sometimes like to ask me what my favorite comic book is, and it’s a difficult choice to make.  There are hundreds of books that I love, even those that I have complete runs of, but none quite like Hellblazer.  In the spring of 1988, I drove to Hays, Kansas and picked up Hellblazer #1 from the stands at Gulliver’s Tattered Covers, and have purchased every single issue of the book (and many crossovers and miniseries and such) ever since.  Though the first issue is a good one, this is the book…

Showtime has announced it has hired David S. Goyer to adapt DC Comics Vertigo imprint, 100 Bullets series for the cable network. 100 Bullets is an atypical comic as it features no superheroes, magic, supernatural elements or a sci-fi twist. It is a dark, noir-style story about the attempt by one man, the mysterious Agent Graves, to destroy a secret group of families that control most of the world’s wealth and power, and it also poses a classic moral question, “If you could get away with murdering the person who ruined your life, would you do it?” I’ve only just…

Or – “Fall Of The House That Jack Built…” Comics, as a medium (so-called because they’re usually neither rare or well-done, with apologies to Ernie Kovacs) tend to lack one important component important to most story-telling concerns: an ending.  So, when Bill and Matt announced that Jack of Fables was going to be wrapping up it’s run with #50, I was both happy and sad.  Happy because it’s rare for a comic book to get the big finale wrapup issues, but sad because it means no more JoF issues.  But, the important question we all have to ask is:  Does…
