Sad news for Lovecraft fans who were anticipating an awesome take on H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness by Guillermo del Toro.  Sadly, the movie will not be, as Universal passed on the project.  GdT cites the hard R rating for the canceling of the project.   What is really surprising is that Universal thought they could do an adaptation of Lovecraft’s work that is clearly in the hard horror genre. Del Toro is now moving on to Legendary Pictures Pacific Rim “a PG-13 movie, involving monsters and the creation of a new world.” “We started developing PAC RIM a…

Yesterday, the cast of Back to the Future gathered for a press event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the BTTF films (and the Blu-ray release).  By coincidence, I was wondering how the film affected Michael J. Fox’s popularity, even though I though he was already on top of the world with Family Ties.  In this clip from the Q&A, Fox sets the record straight. Take the jump for more bits from the event.

In Back to the Future 2, the alleys were full of used laser discs, and now we know the reason – the Back to the Future trilogy is coming to Blu-Ray in October. On October 26, 1985, Marty McFly took the driver’s seat in Dr. Emmet Brown’s DeLorean and introduced audiences to Back to the Future, a journey that launched a new era of moviemaking magic and reinvented the adventure-comedy genre.  The film, which spent 11 weeks at #1 at the U.S. box office, boasts a legendary Hollywood pedigree that includes director Robert Zemeckis, executive producers Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall…

Universal Studios has announced Death Race 2 has began principal photography a few weeks ago in Cape Tow, South Africa, and promises to bigger and bolder than the the first movie.  Although you shouldn’t let the title of the movie fool you into thinking this is a sequel. Instead, Death Race 2 will be a prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson’s remake of the Roger Corman flick. Death Race 2 takes place in the very near future, as the United States economy begins to decline and violent crime starts to spiral out of control. To contain the growing criminal population, a…

I’m not a fan of remaking a movie, unless the next person up can do a better job than the one previously. John Carpenter did an excellent job back in 1982 with his remake of the 1951 “The Thing from Another World,” and it’s held up really well over the years.  However, H’wood being H’wood, everything is going to be remade, and that includes The Thing. Matthijs Van Jeijningen is directing the new movie, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton will star in the update. Winstead will play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica…

I was too stunned by the announcement last week of the casting of Stretch Armstrong and forgot to post news that the Battleship movie has been bumped up to May 25, 2012 from the originally scheduled July 29th date.  Now, word from Universal has Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens filling the spot.  The only other movie currently scheduled for that date is the 3D Smurfs movie that could be a real hit overseas. via Superhero Hype

It sounds completely surreal when one hears that H’wood is making a movie based on the Stretch Armstrong toy from the 1970s, and it is even more weird when it’s reported that Taylor Lautner has been signed to play the stretchy lead.  Universal also made the decision to push the release date from May 15, 2011 to sometime in 2012 so the company can turn the feature into a 3D flick, which pretty much follows the rest of the industry following the huge success of Avatar. The story developed for the movie, being produced by Imagine and Hasbro, sees an…

If you haven’t read the complete Scott Pilgrim series written by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and available from Oni Press, then you only have a few more months to get through it all, as Universal Pictures has started the countdown clock to the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World movie. The movie studio announced last week that the Edgar Wright film will be released on August 13, 2010.  The film stars Michael Cere, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Chris Evans, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead to name a few. Sadly, my copies have long since disappeared since there’s one member of the Major Spoilers…

I love how H’wood pounces on anything based on a graphic novel these days – even when that graphic novel hasn’t been published yet.  Such is the case with the recent acquisition by Universal Pictures and Oni Press’ Frenemy of the State.  Rashida Jones will write the script with Will McCormack, though Jones says she will not star in the movie. “It’s intended for a girl much younger than me, about age 20, an interesting age for girls as they make that scary jump to adulthood,” she said. “She has lived a life of privilege, attended the best schools and…

The Hollywood Reporter is circulating news that BrYan Singer has been tapped by Universal Pictures to produce and direct the big screen adaptation of Battlestar Galactica.  Thanks to a power outage, and a two-year-old who fills up the TiVo with crap children’s programming, I’ve not had a chance to watch the final four episodes of the series, so I have no idea if Singer jumping on board for a movie franchise is a good idea or not. There is no script for the new “Galactica,” though insiders have said the feature is to be a complete reimaginging and will stand…

There’s rumor going about that Dark Horse and Universal Pictures may be teaming up to bring the comic book publisher’s Fear Agent to the big screen. “Agent” centers on a colorful, borderline alcoholic astronaut named Heath Huston, a Texan who works as a so-called fear agent, the last of a dwindling breed of spacemen whose mission it is to fight threats to the planet Earth, which is partly destroyed during the course of the series. It’s only an open writing deal write now (meaning they need to find a writer and like what they see) before anything proceeds. via Risky…

Who would have guessed that the original Atari Asteroids game would have four studios in a bidding war over who would get the rights to produce the movie.  Universal Pictures apparently paid the most money, with Matthew Lopez writing the screenplay. 9o minutes of a space ship spinning around in space blowing up stuff real good doesn’t sound too exciting, so Lopez will need to come up with an original story to wrap around the 1979 game concept. via THR
