IDW Publishing and TOKYOPOP announced that IDW’s international arm will be managing the TOKYOPOP foreign rights catalogue for non-English language markets.
It’s a sad day for Manga fans, as Tokyopop announced it is shutting down its US operations effective May 31, 2011. TOKYOPOP film and television projects and European operations, including the German publishing program, will not be affected by the Los Angeles office closure. In addition, TOKYOPOP will continue its global rights sales via its office in Hamburg, Germany. Press Release TOKYOPOP and Diamond announced today a new sales and distribution agreement between the companies, with a focus on consolidating efforts to build out the manga graphic novel segment across both comic book and bookselling retailers. The new endeavor will commence on July 1, 2011, as TOKYOPOP transitions over its current bookselling distribution from Harper Collins to Diamond Book Distributors.

Karl Urban has been cast as Black Hat, the god of vampires, in Screen Gems’ Priest movie. Adapted by Cory Goodman from a TokyoPop comic, “Priest” is set in a world ravaged by war between man and vampires. Paul Bettany stars as a warrior priest and vampire fighter who teams with a sheriff (Cam Gigandet) and warrior priestess (Maggie Q) to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Los Angeles, CA (June 3, 2008) TOKYOPOP announced Tuesday that it has reorganized its North American business into two separate companies by spinning off its newly established comics-to-film and digital units into one new entity TOKYOPOP Media LLC. As part of the spin-off and reorganization, 39 positions within the organization have been eliminated. The move will allow the company to align its publishing business with current book retail trends, as well as aggressively pursue growth in the white-hot comics-to-film and digital space.
It’s a busy day for Tokyopop. First the company announced a online manga initiative with GoComics, and now Tokyopop has followed up with two other deals. The first of the new announcements should be good news for World of Warcraft and StarCraft fans; Blizzard Entertainment and Tokyopop have entered into an agreement where the comic publisher will release 22 all new WoW and StarCraft titles between now and 2010.
