There were grumblings at the end of last year that Spider-Man 4 was halting production. Then a few days ago, Sony pulled the release date for the picture, allowing Marvel to slide Thor into Spidey’s spot (ouch).  Now it is official as Sony has pulled the plug completely on Sam Raimi and Spider-Man 4.  Forget John Malkovich as the Vulture, Tobey Maguire is out, and so is director Sam Raimi. Instead, Mike Fleming is told, the studio will focus on a Summer 2012 reboot from a script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took…

Nikki Finke has a lot of good inside information, and her latest bit of tinsel town tid-bits has Sony pushing back the start date for Spider-Man 4 to some date in the future, making it very unlikely that the franchise will meet the May 11, 2011 release date.  Finke goes on to speculate that Spider-Man 4 may be being retooled not only for story, but to be turned into a 3D feature.  She’s probably on the right track here as ESPN and Discovery networks are announcing 3D television networks for 2010, making 3D a hot item not only for the…

A lot of websites are reporting the rumor from their various sources that claim H’Wood is looking at Anne Hathaway to play Black Cat in the upcoming Spider-Man 4 movie. Nikki Finke has a lot of insiders at the studios and reports While Sony Pictures insists no decisions have been made, sources tell me that the producers have approached Anne Hathaway to star in the film. As we have no inside sources in H’Wood, which is probably a good idea on so many levels, we’re just going by the stories everyone else is running. I’m not sold on Hathaway in…

District 9, the Peter Jackson produced sci-fi social commentary flick, hit the number one spot over the weekend, bringing in an estimated $37 million.  While not spectacular for major block buster numbers, the film reportedly cost $30 million to make, with Sony/Tri-Star buying the distribution rights for $25 million.  That means as the movie gains momentum over the next couple of weeks, that there will be a lot of gravy floating around for a potential sequel if director Neill Blomkamp decides to go for it. And while you might be flying high on that news, I’ll bring you back down…

James Vanderbilt has signed by Sony to write the fourth installment of the Spider-Man movie franchise.  Although that might seem like a big announcement for some, it’s kind of late news as Vanderbilt already turned in the first draft of the flick, with two other writers (David Lindsay-Abaire and Gary Ross) to do the rewrites.  The bigger news is he is also on board as the writer for movies five and six. Spider-Man 4 is currently in pre-production, with a 2010 production date, so everything can be wrapped and the film in theaters by May 2011. via Variety

With the San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, some of the weird from Hollywood is starting to surge to the forefront, as we present another installment of the Rapid Roundup of Tinsel Town Rumors.  Some might be true, some might be outright lies, but they are all entertaining… to someone… maybe not you… maybe that cute girl on the bus would be interested in your thoughts on the subject… or maybe not.  I don’t think looking at her and saying, “So what do you think about Cameron Diaz and the Green Hornet?” will get a dialogue started.
