Art Appreciation Moment of the Day: Skottie Young’s studio

For the creative type, having an office that is both functional and kick-ass is really important.  I’ve showed off the Major Spoilers HQ a few years ago, but over time the place has grown to be quite a mess.  I’m rectifying that at the moment, and will show off what has become of the space since it was last under the microscope.  In the meantime, I thought using today’s Art Appreciation Moment of the Day to showcase an artists’ workspace might be part inspiration, part motivation.

Art Appreciation Moment of the Day: Skottie Young

If the theme is Wizard of Oz, I’d be remiss if I didn’t have a day featuring the most awesome work of Skottie Young for the current Marvel series.

My first cover to the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I wasn’t thrilled with this when I first finished it. In fact, we almost just used this a promo piece instead of a cover. Luckily my editors liked it enough to talk me off the artistic ledge and just use it as the cover. I’m glad we did, it set a nice tone for the covers to follow. It’s been cool to see this as a poster hanging in shop windows.

Marvel has announced its interpretation of Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz # has sold out at the distributor level (although there may be copies available at your comic shop), prompting the company to go back to press with a second printing – complete with a variant cover.

The variant cover for this issue, isn’t something from the inside of the book, but rather a new cover by artist Skottie Young.

I fell in love with Skottie Young’s art styling a while ago, so when I saw he was working on Marvel’s take on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, I had to pick up a copy.  Issue #2 arrives next week, and Marvel has provided Major Spoilers with a sneak peek where readers discover the origins of the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman.

Marvel recently released a free sketch book for the series.   if you missed it, you can check it out at the Marvel Digital Comics site. I love Skottie Young’s art, and there is something interesting about reading different interpretations of the classic Baum story, so I’ll probably pick it up.

Marvel Sneak Peek: Wizard of Oz Sketchbook

Take a classic tale of a girl lost in a strange land, combine it with art from Skottie Young, let the Marvel PR folk whip out the press release, and you have a sneak peek of the upcoming Wizard of Oz Sketchbook.  I really dig Skottie Young’s art, and seeing his pencils for the Oz tale make me feel all good inside.

Best of all, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz Sketchbook is completely free when it arrives in stores next week.
